TotalEnergies CAF Champions League Quarter-Finals take shape as six teams secure qualification

https://www.cafonline.com/caf-champions ... ification/

Defending champions, Ahly joined by five strong contenders in quarter-finals

Two quarter-final places remain for the taking in Match Day 6

Photo-finish expected in group stages closing

Six Teams have secured their place in this season’s TotalEnergies CAF Champions League Quarter-finals, after some nail-biting round of Match Day 5 fixtures that took place on Friday and Saturday.

Defending champions and Egyptian giants, Al Ahly remain on course to their title defense after a 1-0 victory over Ghana’s Medeama saw them through to the exciting knockout phase of the competition with a game to spare.

Joining the reigning champions after Match Day 5 are five strong African clubs: Ivorian side Asec Mimosas, South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns who are also the African Football League champions, Angola’s Petro de Luanda, former African Champions and FIFA Club World Cup finalists TP Mazembe and Tanzania’s Young Africans who all qualify for the quarter-finals of the continent’s premier club competition with a game in hand.

Of the current six teams that have officially booked their places, only two are yet to taste continental success, with Al Ahly (11), Asec Mimosas (1), Mamelodi Sundowns (1) and TP Mazembe (5) all having previously lifted Africa’s most coveted club football trophy.

The qualification of the six teams officially sets up a grand closing to the group stages of the competition in what is sure to be a dramatic race to securing the last two available spots on Match Day 6 scheduled for 01 – 02 March.

Mamelodi Sundowns and TP Mazembe are through in Group A, while Group D was decided by Ahly and Young Africans’ respective wins, meaning that the two remaining places will be contested in Group B and C.

In Group B, Morocco’s Wydad AC who had a rather slow start to their Group Stage campaign injected life into the title ambitions with a 1-0 win over Jwaneng Galaxy in Botswana – a result that sees them tied on six (6) points with Simba AC, who face Jwaneng Galaxy in next week’s final round, while Wydad take on the high-flying Asec Mimosas.

In Group C, Petro de Luanda’s qualification leaves the race for a second place to be contested by Esperance Sportive de Tunis and Al-Hilal. Interestingly, the two sides face each other head on in a fixture that promises to produce fireworks in Tunis on Saturday evening.

TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup: All to play for on Match Day 6

https://www.cafonline.com/caf-confedera ... tch-day-6/

USM Alger headline five clubs already through to Quarter-Finals

Abu Salem to make Quarter-Final debut

Grand closing expected in Match Day 6

Defending champions of the TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup USM Alger, along with four other African clubs secured their tickets to the Quarter-Finals of the competition after Match Day 5 on Sunday, 25 February.

Despite losing 2-1 to Libyan side Al Hilal Benghazi, the reigning champions, who also hold the TotalEnergies CAF Super Cup title headline the current five clubs that have booked their respective places in the knockout phase of this season’s edition.

After a pulsating round of Match Day 5, the five clubs that have successfully advanced to the Quarter-Finals with a game in hand are: USM Alger, (Algeria), Abu Salem (Libya), RS Berkane (Morocco), Stade Malien (Mali) and Zamalek (Egypt).

Of the five clubs that have qualified, four have won the TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup trophy, which are current holders, USM Alger (2022/23), Stade de Malien (2008/09), RS Berkane (2019/20, 2021/22, ) as well as Zamalek (2018/19).

With Match Day 6 scheduled for next weekend to make up the final eight (8) that will aim to dethrone USM Alger, Group B (Zamalek, Abu Salem) and D (RS Berkane, Stade Malien) has been decided with a game to spare, which sees all eyes cast on Group A and D to battle for the three remaining spots.

In Group A, Egypt’s Modern Future need a mere point to take them through but will be up against a highly spirited, Al Hilal Benghazi who could topple them from second place should they get the away win.

An interesting scenario has presented itself in Group C where leaders, Dreams FC of Ghana, who are on 12 points face Rivers United of Nigeria who are three points behind them.

Tunisian side, Club Africain are also on 9 points and face the already eliminated Academica do Lobito of Angola in Tunisia, who may want to bow out of the competition in style by causing a major upset against the more fancied Tunisians at home.

Wydad are bad this year in both CAF Champions League and their domestic league. They are currently 4th, 18 points behind 1st place and 14 points behind 2nd place (but with 2 games in hand), so likely will not qualify for CAF Champions League next season.

Seems like the run to the final of the African Football League took a lot out of them and they could not recover. Of course since the African Football League is invitation-based and not result-based, they may be back for the next edition

Tanzania are now firmly established in the top 6 in the league rankings, overtaking the likes of DR Congo and Sudan.

Of course like the above two, they are mostly a two-team league, with Simba and Young Africans getting almost all the ranking points (domestically there is another team Azam that is decent, but have not succeeded in African club competitions).

In general, the country are getting quite a lot of investment in football. Both the men’s and women’s national teams are improving, with both qualifying for this year’s AFCONs, and their women’s u17 reached the 2022 World Cup quarter-finals. Also they will co-host the men’s AFCON in 2027 with Kenya and Uganda.
