XG analysis at 1/4 of the season

XPts

What would be the table if all goal chances had been converted?

PSG would be leader with a slight advantage over Monaco and Nice, but the main upset is that Marseille would be in the top 4. But Marseille don't convert their chances and concede more goals than expected (see below).
Lens and Lyon are also big underachievers, mainly because of offensive issues too.
Nantes and Lorient are the biggest over-achievers thanks to a great efficiency in attack

Code: Select all

Xpts	Pts	Difference
20,71 18	-2,71 -	Paris SG
18,79 20	1,21 -	Monaco
17,49 19	1,51 -	Nice
16,31 12	-4,31 -	Marseille
-----------------------------------------------
15,88 15	-0,88 -	Lille
15,05 14	-1,05 -	Reims
13,91 15	1,09 -	Brest
-----------------------------------------
13,69 11	-2,69 -	Rennes
13,46 9	-4,46 -	Lens
10,94 9	-1,94 -	Montpellier
9,82 11	1,18 -	Toulouse
9,20 10	0,80 -	Le Havre
9,19 14	4,81 -	Nantes
8,48 3	-5,48 -	Lyon
8,38 10	1,62 -	Strasbourg
----------------------------------------------
7,85 5	-2,85 -	Clermont
7,18 8	0,82 -	Metz
6,63 10	3,37 -	Lorient

Efficiency in attack (Goals vs XG)

As mentioned above, Marseille, Lens and Lyon are all suffering from goal chances conversion issues.
In contrary, Lorient, Nates and also Monaco are very good to take their chances

Code: Select all

XG	Goals	Difference
8,04	15	6,96 -	Lorient
19,5	23	3,50 -	Monaco
12,16	15	2,84 -	Nantes
6,11	8	1,89 -	Metz
11,12	12	0,88 -	Montpellier
(...)
15,95	12	-3,95 -	Marseille
10,99	7	-3,99 -	Lyon
14,09	10	-4,09 -	Nice
14,33	9	-5,33 -	Brest
14,17	8	-6,17 -	Lens

At individual level, if you look at the players who had the most goal chances (what in itself is a performance), you will noticve that Aubameyang scored 1 goal only whereas he was expected to score almost 5. This is an issue for Marseille. It's worse for Le Douaron (Brest) who has not been able to score a goal with almost the same number of chances but expectations (and wages) are much lower for him.
In the other end, the young Ako Adams of Montpellier is more clinical, so is Ismaila Sarr from OM

Code: Select all

XG	Goals	Difference
7,30 8	0,70 -	Kylian Mbappé (Paris SG)
4,70 1	-3,70 -	Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (Marseille)
4,29 0	-4,29 -	Jérémy Le Douaron (Brest)
4,21 5	0,79 -	Wissam Ben Yedder (Monaco)
4,03 2	-2,03 -	Lebo Mothiba (Strasbourg)
3,67 2	-1,67 -	Marshall Munetsi (Reims)
3,27 5	1,73 -	Ako Adams (Montpellier)
1,60 3	1,40 -	Ismaila Sarr (Marseille)
3,08 2	-1,08 -	Arnaud Kalimuendo (Rennes)
2,96 3	0,04 -	Terem Moffi (Reims)

Efficiency in defense

Lens and Marseille again concede more goals than expected.
In the other side, Toulouse , Nantes and Brest are very good.
Note that Nice who already don't concede many goal chances (7 only) only had 4 goals conceded thanks to their young Polish keeper Marcin Bulka (who stopped two penalites at Monaco among other great performances)

This is unbelievably brutal, probably the worst incident of it's kind I've seen. Why are Marseille fans just insane raging maniacs? Some choice quotes from the article:
Lyon have warned that an "even more serious tragedy" could occur if action is not taken after manager Fabio Grosso was "seriously injured" in an attack on the team bus in Marseille.

The Ligue 1 match was postponed after the Lyon bus was hit by rocks on its way to Stade Velodrome on Sunday.

Lyon said Grosso and assistant Raffaele Longo were struck by projectiles and sustained facial injuries.
French sports minister Amelie Oudea-Castera said seven arrests have been made after six coaches with Lyon fans were also targeted before the game between 10th-placed Marseille and bottom-of-the table Lyon, which was due to kick off at 19:45 GMT.
Lyon said several people "violently attacked" the bus and windows were smashed by projectiles.

Images on social media showed a bloodied Grosso lying on a stretcher. Lyon said he and Longo were "directly hit and seriously injured in the face during the attack".
"He (Grosso) can't hold a conversation, he had shards of glass in his face," Lyon president John Textor told Prime Video.

"I'm very angry. Our players, our coach prepared for tonight and the fans wanted to see the game played.

"Once the window was broken, other projectiles hit him, just above the eye. There were beer bottles, which hit him on the forehead."
French sports minister Oudea-Castera said: "The images of the stoned buses of the Lyon bus and its supporters, and those of Fabio Grosso's bloodied face are revolting.

"These unacceptable acts deny the very values of football and sport, and their perpetrators must all be found and severely punished.

"These actions marked by stupidity and hatred, which have nothing to do with sport, must be eradicated with the greatest determination."
From these descriptions, I can only imagine the bus was stationary as it was attacked. So the man's got glass in his face and they're slamming beer bottles into his head? This should be treated as attempted murder. How is it anything else?

It happens every season (same for PSG) but until now broken windows of the bus had not injured players and staff. A couple of years ago President atlas was touched but without much damage.
As there has never ben any sanction I presume that it was considered as part of local folklore I presume.
Things may change now. let's wait and see.

Note that the Major of Marseille, who is sometimes very prompt to protest when for example the Olympic Games Committee decided to display the inscription 'Paris 2024' on the Velodrome stadium whereas Marseille will host some events, has not made any official reaction yet.
This says all.

I'm surprised they haven't changed the glass on the bus if it gets attacked every year. If you can get glass that can stop a bullet, and the windows are getting busted out anyway, why not change the glass?

It happens every year and no action is taken so the vandals know they are free to keep up and scale up the terror.
Not only in France but I think most countries authorities are very likely to fight hard any kind of disturbs except football hooligans.

@Lorric Bullet proof glass? Thats not the solution. They are a football team not the military elite force. They are going for a match not war.
When you think that using Bullet proof windows is ok in that situation, something is very wrong.

Oh don't get me wrong at all, I think it's a ridiculous situation and they shouldn't have to have reinforced glass to travel to a football game. But if no one's doing anything about it, then you have to protect yourself. It's kind of like when some girl gets angry that she's been told she needs to not go somewhere alone or needs to keep her wits about her, that she'll say you're the problem and insist on going alone, yes it sucks and you shouldn't have to do this in an ideal World, but if there's known to be dangerous men there you have to protect yourself. If you know you're going somewhere where you're going to get attacked, you need to protect yourself.

But it is wrong, why aren't they getting a police escort and police on hand to round up the scum if they show themselves?

The top 3 is running away, while Marseille, Lens and Rennes are still stuck in mid-table.
Reims are doing again a good job with its young manager, while Lyon are still winless.

The Disciplinary Commission of the League took their decision for the OM-OL game.

The game is postponed on December 6 and will be played at Marseille with their fans.
In other words, no sanction.
The League consider that Marseille are not responsible for anything as the incidents were outside outside the stadium.

But the Disciplinary Commission is still inquiring about some racist songs made by the OL fans within the stadium (for those who have been able to enter into the stadium) ...

Do you think that UEFA would have taken the same decision? (the absence of decision I should say)

One thought for Fabio Grosso who will have to go back to Marseille one month and half laster as if nothing happened.
