24 man squads this year, and given that I think 12 subs are going to be on the bench it would mean 1 player gets singled out to stay in the stands, which seems somewhat harsh.

The List A size is still 25, not 24.
And you can have "infinite" club trained players born in 2001 or after in the List B.
Which means that some clubs will have trouble to even fill their List A's (not enough club trained or association trained players, since 4+4 of the 25 must meet these criteria), while others will have no problem at all and will even have effective squads of over 25 by including their younger club trained players in List B.

Records and Statistics:
Champions League (all 141 participants - 1992/1993 to 2019/2020)
Europa League (all 215 participants - 2009/2010 to 2019/2020)
UEFA Youth League (all 162 participants - 2013/2014 to 2019/2020)

I'm confused. If you look at the squads they have 24 players in them.

It depends.
Example: Dortmund has 25

It's the players without the "*" in front of their name, others like Bellingham and Moukoko are in List B.
But Marseille only has 20

Strange Marseille only registered that many. I was reading that Bakambu and Dieng were left out, and yet they still had spaces to fill. It isn't like they could say sorry we couldn't fit you into the squad.

I'm not sure if that's Marseille's case, but punishment for FFP violations also involves submitting "shorter" squads...
