Georgios Karaiskakis (Olympiacos's stadium) will host the UEFA Super Cup in August 2023.
OPAP Arena (AEK's new stadium) is expected to host the Conference League Final in May 2024 (official announcement in April).

Aris added another painful elimination to their Cup endeavors since their return to the Super League, with Olympiacos substitute GK Tzolakis saving a penalty for the first time in his career (not counting youth levels), beating Andre Gray in the 84th minute, and 10-men Olympiacos scoring 2 minutes later sealing the ticket for the Semi Finals.

PAOK completed their 3 matches against Panathinaikos with 2 wins and 1 draw, beating the Greens away in the League and eliminating them from the Cup. Facing Lamia who had an extremely lucky draw to reach this stage, their path to the final is open.

Olympiacos and AEK will face each other 5 times until the end of the season: 1 in the 2nd round of the League, 2 in the Cup and 2 in the play-offs.

Volos - Panaitolikos 1-3
PAS Giannina - Atromitos 1-1
Olympiacos - OFI 2-1
AEK - Aris 3-0
PAOK - Levadiakos 3-2
Lamia - Ionikos 0-2
Asteras Tripolis - Panathinaikos 1-0

Standings:

AEK.................15-2-3......47
Panathinaikos......14-3-3....45
PAOK...............12-6-2......42
Olympiacos........12-6-2.....42
Aris..................9-4-7.....31
Volos.................8-5-7.....29
-----------------------------------------
Atromitos...........6-7-7......25
Panaitolikos........6-5-9......23
Asteras Tripolis.....4-9-7.....21
OFI....................4-7-9....19
PAS Giannina........4-7-9.....19
Levadiakos.........2-7-11.....13
Lamia................1-9-10....12
Ionikos..............2-5-13.....11

- Everyone could see it coming and it happened this week: AEK overtook Panathinaikos in 1st place. AEK beat Aris 3-0 in the matchday's derby, being the better team for most of the match and seeing their work become easier after Aris got a red card (when the score was 1-0). Sergio Araujo is the leading assister of the Greek Super League and the yellow-and-blacks have the best attack, defense and goal difference in the league.
- Aris are complaining for a penalty not given in their view (when the score was 1-0 and before their red card), but in the end they are 1-1-7 against the big 4 this season, a horrible record so far and anything above 5th place looks like a miracle. A very disappointing season for Aris after having spent a huge amount of money in the summer to build a new team from scratch.
- Panathinaikos falls from the top in a stadium that has a lot of bad memories for the Greens: Tripoli. Asteras once again proves to be a thorn to big clubs at home, having already gotten results against Olympiacos and AEK as well. A stupid red card for Kourbelis left the struggling Greens with a man down early in the match, and Asteras got all 3 points in the 80th minute with their sub Bartolo. Panathinaikos has been on life support after the World Cup and expectedly drop to 2nd and see Olympiacos and PAOK within 3 points.
- Olympiacos for only the 2nd time this season managed to win from behind, and it was against the same opponent with the 1st time: OFI. The Cretan team shocked the red-and-whites with an early goal by Dicko, and GK Mandas had another huge match after the one against PAOK, but in the end 2 of Olympiacos' chances hit the net (thanks to Mandas it was only 2), one by each CF, Bakambu and El Arabi. OFI then could have equalised in the end but saw two one-on-one stopped by Olympiacos GK Paschalakis. A win for Olympiacos but for yet another match their problems were exposed by a mediocre opponent.
- PAOK struggled a bit more than expected at home against Levadiakos, but got the win which keep them 3rd before the derby against Olympiacos at home. Like their next opponents, PAOK's weak point appears to be their defensive line.
- Volos continued their terrible 2nd round, but Atromitos failed to capitulate and only got a draw against PAS thanks to GK Gianniotis saving a penalty in the end.
- Huge win for Ionikos in the bottom clash which keeps them alive in the fight to avoid relegation against the two Central Greece teams. Lamia is by far the worst team of the league and it's about time they go down - but in the play outs it's common to see terrible teams suddenly transform to CL contenders and go on win streaks against unmotivated oponents.

There have been a lot of interesting transfers this January, which I will recap during the week.

January Transfer Window

AEK

In:
Paolo Fernandes (LW) from Volos

Out:
Panagiotis Tsintotas (GK) to PAS Giannina

The new league leaders had the least eventful transfer window, with their management believing that the team doesn't need changes. Fernandes is an extra solution for the wings, while Tsintotas who left was the 3rd GK this season.

Panathinaikos

In:
Daniel Mancini (LW/RW) from Aris
László Kleinheisler (AM) from Osijek
Tymoteusz Puchacz (LB) from Union Berlin
Alexander Jeremejeff (FW) from Hacken

Out:
Sokratis Dioudis (GK) to Zaglebie Lubin
Alexander Jeremejeff (FW) to Levadiakos on loan
Antonio Xavier (RW/LW) to Levadiakos on loan

The Greens 3 new players are on a paper a reinforcement to the thinnest squad of the big 4, but their fans were expecting much more in their attempt to win the title after the unexpectedly great 1st round. Dioudis was not the starting GK.

In the weirdest transfer saga of the club this month, Panathinaikos bought the top scorer of the Swedish League Alexander Jeremejeff and gave him on loan to Levadiakos, prefering to support the (utterly mediocre in my view) Fotis Ioannidis as a substitute CF!

PAOK

In:
Taison (LW/AM) from Internacional
Tomasz Kędziora (RB) from Dynamo Kyiv on loan

Out:
Leo Jaba (LW/RW) to Sao Bernardo

PAOK made two targeted transfers, with one of them patching the hole in their right side of defense, while the other one adds experience and quality (with the gamble of stamina and fitness since Taison is 36) in their attack. Jaba who left was not playing.

Olympiacos

In:
Rodinei (RB) from Flamengo
Ramon (LB) from Flamengo
Sergi Canos (LW/RW) from Brentford on loan
Zymer Bytyqi (LW/RW) from Konyaspor

Out:
Kenny Lala (RB) to Brest
Leonardo Koutris (LB) to Pogon Szeszczin
Giannis Masouras (RB) to Miedz Legnica
Sime Vrsajlko (RB) to Free Agent
Pierre Kunde (CM) to Bochum on loan
Aboubakar Kamara (CF) to Aris
Doron Leidner (LB) to Austria Wien on loan
Josh Bowler (RW) to Nottingham Forest (loan termination)
Hwang Ui-Jo (CF) to Nottingham Forest (loan termination)
Konrad de la Fuente (LW/RW) to Marseille (loan termination)
Gonzalo Avila (RB) to Ludogorets
Tomas Vaclik (GK) to Huddersfield
Andreas Bouchalakis (CM) to Konyaspor on loan
Aguibou Camara (CM/AM) to Atromitos on loan

Not 1, not 2, but 14 players were unceremoniously kicked out of Olympiacos this January, with the ownership trying to save whatever can be saved from the mess they created in the summer. Almost all the players who left were deadweight, with the fans being relieved the club got rid of them and disappointed the list isn't longer! Vrsajlko turned out to be in the contidion of a retired player, Kamara and Ui-Jo were competing on who is worse, Bowler never tactically adjusted, de la Fuente is a fraud promoted by agents, Lala was a known deadweight, Kunde was not a starter, Bouchalakis was a red flag for the fans for more than a year, Leidner never got a chance (because Reabciuk who is playing has agent connections), while Vaclik was injured for 4 months. Avila got punished for the stupid penalty that deprived Olympiacos of a win against Panathinaikos (it's a ruthless environment, the owner decided to kick him out because of this) and Aguibou was a shade of his last year's self.

The 15th player to go will probable be the overweight Marcelo.

Interesting arrivals: Rodinei has already proven to be better than all the jokes covering the RB position for the last 2 years. Ramon is young and is a gamble. Canos in theory solves the black hole in the wings whily Bytyqi is a super weird transfer that probably happened to satisfy some agent as a trade with Konyaspor taking Bouchalakis.

Aris

In:
Vladimir Darida (CM) from Hertha Berlin
Aboubakar Kamara (RB) from Olympiacos
Lukas Rupp (AM) from Free Agent

Out:
Edwin Rodriguez (RW) to Olimpia (loan interruption)
Pape Cheikh Diop (DM/CM) to Free Agent
Daniel Mancini (LW/RW) to Panathinaikos

Aris lost Mancini and this is a blow, got back Kamara (why did they even want him back is a mystery), Darida (good on paper), and Rupp (who was not active for months). Tough to estimate if they come out as winners or losers, their team is mysterious this season and underperforming. They can't go higher than 5th anyway unless Panathinaikos utterly collapse, and they won't lose 5th to Volos, so the stakes are less high for them than for the other big clubs.

Rest of the clubs

Atromitos got Aguibou Camara on loan the last day and this can be a big transfer for them. Nothing noteworthy for Asteras Tripolis and Panaitolikos, Volos sold Fernandes and changed a lot of players, while OFI brought players from strange markets (for a small Greek club) and are hopeful for more improvement. PAS got Tsintotas, the once super talent Ninis and 2 players from Uruguay.

The bottom 3 were the ones with the most noteworthy transfers though, with Levadiakos stealing the show with Jeremejeff on loan from Panathinaikos. Manos is a big move for Ionikos as well, while Lamia got a few players from theoretically superior teams.

Happy Birthday, Panathinaikos 🥳

@seso , good luck to your team in the championship race. I still believe you can do it, despite all the difficulties.

PS: I can see Krzysztof Warzycha on this picture.

OFI - PAS Giannina 0-0
Ionikos - Aris 1-0
Panathinaikos - Lamia 2-0
Atromitos - AEK postponed
Panaitolikos - Asteras Tripolis 0-0
PAOK - Olympiacos 0-0
Levadiakos - Volos 0-3

Standings:

Panathinaikos......15-3-3....48
AEK.................15-2-3......47 (20 matches)
PAOK...............12-7-2......43
Olympiacos........12-7-2.....43
Volos.................9-5-7.....32
Aris..................9-4-8.....31
-----------------------------------------
Atromitos...........6-7-7......25 (20 matches)
Panaitolikos........6-6-9......24
Asteras Tripolis.....4-10-7....22
OFI....................4-8-9....20
PAS Giannina........4-8-9.....20
Ionikos..............3-5-13.....14
Levadiakos.........2-7-12.....13
Lamia................1-9-11....12

- The true Super League is back! AEK with a show of force outside the field succeeded into not playing against Atromitos and in all likelihood will win the match in the courtrooms. Urged by AEK officials (including a gangster who is an unofficial advisor to AEK's boss and runs the backstage stuff related to the referees and the federation), the referee of the match measured the goalposts and found them smaller than they should be by a few cm. The officials of Atromitos tried digging the goal line (!) to make the measurement bigger, but the referee still wasn't satisfied, measured in 8 different points and found one of them lacking by 1 cm (!) and decided not to play the match.

Several questions are raised here. Did everyone who played Atromitos away played with slightly smaller goals? If yes, how is it possible that only AEK's officials noticed immediately? AEK claims that they shouldn't play with an illegal goalpost which is absolutely fair, but that's where fair ends and shameless begins.

AEK shamelessly plans to demand to win the match in the courtroom instead of being played another day so far, and even reached the point on issuing an announcement in which more or less they blame Panathinaikos (one of their competitors for the title) for not leaving the pitch to win the match in the courtroom when AEK fans shot a flare at their goalkeeper moments before AEK's goal in the derby! They haven't even tried to leak an excuse on why they plan to demand the win in the court instead of the match to be played another day. Atromitos' owner claims that AEK's owner told him on the phone that "I want the championship so I need to win", which AEK did not refuse in their counter-statement...

Since the federation and the sports judges are under AEK's influence, the match is expected to be given 0-3 to AEK in the courtroom.

- Ah yes, there was football played as well. PAOK and Olympiacos drew 0-0 in the matchday's derby, in which PAOK was better, had more chances, but their sloppy finishing against their ex-GK Paschalakis stopped them. Olympiacos' biggest chance for the win was a shot by James Rodriguez which hit the crossbar. Both teams are de facto 7 points behind AEK now and have yet to play them. PAOK confirmed their recent good form and Olympiacos confirmed once again that their team is a malfunctioning group which includes several deadweights.

- Panathinaikos is back at the top while waiting for th sports courts, by beating bottom placed Lamia 2-0 at home. Not much to say here, any team that loses points to Lamia have only themselves to blame.

- Aris added another shameful result to their season by losing to Ionikos, and Alan Pardew was fired. The Thessaloniki black and yellows fell again to 6th (!) in a season in which they have given the highest contracts in the history of the club.

- Volos is 5th again after beating Levadiakos, while the other matches between the play out teams ended 0-0.

Cup Semi Finals, 1st Leg

Lamia - PAOK postponed due to snow
AEK - Olympiacos 3-0

Another disgrace for Olympiacos, 1st loss after 5 years and 16 matches to a rotated (!) AEK side with a humiliating 3 goal margin.

Michel could be fired the next days - there is no light at the end of the tunnel for Olympiacos for this season. They lack both the abilities and the mentality to show up when it matters.

PAS Giannina - Ionikos 0-0
Volos - Atromitos 2-1
Aris - Panathinaikos 1-2
Lamia - OFI 1-4
Asteras Tripolis - PAOK 2-2
AEK - Levadiakos 3-0
Olympiacos - Panaitolikos 6-1

Standings:

Panathinaikos......16-3-3....51
AEK.................16-2-3......50 (21 matches)
Olympiacos........13-7-2.....46
PAOK...............12-8-2......44

Asteras Tripolis.....4-11-7....23
PAS Giannina........4-9-9.....21
Ionikos..............3-6-13.....15
Levadiakos.........2-7-13.....13
Lamia................1-9-12....12

- Huge late win for Panathinaikos against Aris. A Palacios goal in the 87th minutes kept the greens on top (until the sports judge rules about Atromitos-AEK) against the once again underwhelming Aris, who is now in danger not only to miss Europe but even the play offs are not 100% safe!
- Easy home wins for AEK and Olympiacos, with Olympiacos venting their frustrations on Panaitolikos and AEK having a training session against Levadiakos.
- Shock for PAOK, Asteras Tripolis score 2 goals in injury time and deprive PAOK of two points out of nowhere! Asteras manages to stay undefeated against Olympiacos, Panathinaikos, PAOK and AEK in Tripoli, a traditionally tough stadium for big teams, but cannot climb in the standings because of their total inability to get wins against the similar level/weaker teams. PAOK falls back to 4th one week before hosting AEK, and this match is now a must win for PAOK to stay alive in the fight for the title.
- Volos secured the top 6 unfortunately, and have a realistic shot for Europe (!) now, a scenario that would be terrible both for the Greek coefficient and football itself, since Volos is an artificial club with no fans founded in 2017 and used for money laundering by the gangster mayor of the city.
- OFI had another good match in the 2nd round against the worst team of the league, Lamia, which led to Lamia's coach being fired. Ionikos got another point and have a 2 point lead from the relegation zone now.

In a (pleasantly) surprising decision, the sports judge rules that Atromitos-AEK will be played after all.

AEK has the right to appeal if their plan is to double down on grabbing the 3 points without playing.

Edit: AEK confirms they will appeal, continuing to pursue the 3 points without playing the match.

After Lamia, Levadiakos fired their coach as well.

They are the 3rd and 4th team after Olympiacos and Aris to fire a 2nd coach in the same season.

Marcelo will be released from Olympiacos the following days, after a comical and disgraceful stint in which he had the physical condition of a retired player and could barely run.
