Is a fight for Europe expected this year with some of the rest?
It is still too early for any conclusions, it is still summer and the transfer period is still going on. We expected problems for Rijeka at the start of the season because they sold out the entire first team, the surprise is Osijek's very bad start, but it is probably a poorly timed form at the start of the season. The only thing that can be concluded so far is that the new first league team Varaždin is much better than it was thought.
Osijek's predicament looks worse because from what I've seen they've already played most of the minnows and have yet to play Dinamo Zagreb and Hajduk for the 1st round.
But Rijeka also have to play Dinamo and Hajduk, against Hajduk they have postponed their match.

Lokomotiva and Gorica will have their shot at getting European places this season. Rijeka is horrible with bunch of new players out of form and a coach that has very little experience and success. Osijek is in a "hostage crisis" between coach Bjelica and the board. They cannot stand each other any more, play like crap, but the board won't fire him because they'll need to pay him and the assistants their full contracts (Bjelica gets a record breaking €1.2m per year, and the assistants all together the same amount). Bjelica won't resign because he'd need to do the same and pay the board. A mutual understanding and termination seems most likely, but so far nothing has been decided.

I wrote this on 20 June, the day when Tadic was appointed as coach.

Less than 2 months and one disastrous start to the season later, Dragan Tadic is sacked by Rijeka from the coaching position.

4 games, that's very quick to sack a coach. Not saying it's wrong, but teams even with worse starts don't usually fire the coach that fast.

In England, or big leagues in general.
A top 5 team in a Balkan league who has started the season with a European elimination and 1 win in 4 matches in their league would 90% sack the coach.

Why is that?

People still underestimate and belittle other teams, so if you lose against teams not named Dinamo/Hajduk/Partizan/Zvezda you are considered a loser and you get fired.

There is no long term work or respect for the opposition. In reality there is no shame in losing to Lokomotiva or Slaven, but it is hard to explain that to the managment boards, who are only looking for instant success.

Less patience, more demand for immediate results, the fans want change and since it's not easy to change half the roster, changing the coach is an easy way for the owner to show that he is a strong man who loves the club and proves to the fans that failure has reprecussions.

Also, some leagues have teams that will not drop many points in the season, thus if you're trailing by 6-7 points early, it is already almost impossible to overtake them. Look at Red Star's record last year for example : 32-4-1. Partizan was 31-5-1. The fact that they've started with 2-3-1 this year is almost damning for their title hopes.

They change half the roster any half season anyway. :)

9. Rijeka 6 1 2 3 5 8 -3 5
10. Osijek 6 1 2 3 7 11 -4 5

Rijeka and Osijek, after shameful performances in the ECL qualifiers, are now at the bottom of the HNL in the fight for survival. The coach of Rijeka Budicin is asking the club to remove him. I wouldn't blame Tadić and Budicin for the failure of Rijeka, it's the club's leadership that sold out the entire team.

It's still available in Britain too :exclamation:

Quite handy still to use it if you are offline for quick checking of sport, news headlines, weather etc. all in one place.
