Thanks a lot! Fewer and fewer survivors left from this and WWII for example.

Uwe Seeler died today, aged 85. Fore sure the best-ever German footballer among those who never lifted a world-cup trophy.

From wikipedia:
Although Seeler never won a World Cup (his involvement as a player in the tournament started four years after West Germany won their first World Cup (1954) and ended four years before they won their second (1974)), he had a prolific career in the tournament; he was the first player ever to appear in 20 World Cup matches (he retired with 21 matches played, tied for third all-time); the first ever to score in four World Cups (beating Pelé by only a few minutes), and the first player to score at least two goals in each of four World Cups (matched in 2014 by his compatriot Miroslav Klose). He also ranks third in all-time minutes played in World Cups, with 1,980, behind Paolo Maldini and Lothar Matthäus.

He was a great player - if I say so. Seen him a few times. He played for Hamburg all his life and of course for the Mannschaft. RIP.
I've attached a clip of Italy - Germany 4:3, 1970 WC in Mexico. The game of the century. Fantastic teams with legends playing, among them Uwe Seeler. More than 52 years passed, but still remember almost everything.

I read somewhere that he could have won the World Cup in 1954, but the registration deadline had already passed, so he wasn't allowed to be in the WC-winning squad.
Great forward, saw his most famous goals again today. The sitting bicyclekick and the backwards header.

Seeler still played in the Hamburg youth squad during the 1953/54 season. Remember that back in those days, Germany still had no Bundesliga, with the domestic top flight being divided in 5 regional divisions. So covering even those 5 regional divisions was a huge task for Sepp Herberger, the 1954 manager. No internet, no mobiles, no TV coverage. So paying attention to the also only regional youth leagues was simply not possible. When Herberger finally got aware of him, the registration deadline had in fact already passed.

Fernando Gomes (portuguese striker born in 1956) died today.
He won the 1986-87 European Cup and the 1983 and 1985 European Golden Shoe. Was known as bi-bota (double-shoe) due to this achievement.

Sinisa Mihajlovic has died at the age of 53 :(

Image

Incredible player. True legend. I liked him since his time at Red Star, when he scored some amazing goals (eg. in the semi-final against Bayern). I was happy that he made an excellent career in Italy.

I have a girlfriend and she is so blue.

Very charismatic player, one of the best free kick specialists in the history of the game. And the rest, his views and actions outside football are not important anymore. RIP...

Rest in Peace, Christian Atsu (former Porto, Chelsea, Newcastle United and Hatayspor player)

Image

He was supposed to leave Hatay after their match against Kasimpasa a few days ago. His flight tickets were even booked.
But finally decided to stay after scoring the winning goal in '90+7. A tragic death.

May I respectfully inform you that I've created a tributes thread to him.

Just Fontaine (France) died at the age of 89.

At the 1958 WC he was crowned topscorer with 13 (!) goals, a record that is set in concrete a probably won't be broken.
PAOK is not a club. PAOK is a cultural phenomenon.
