Belgian Football Season 2019/20

UEFA - We care about money. Pravda za Kolubaru!
It has been confirmed that the Jupiler Pro League season has come to an end. Club Brugge are champions, with KAA Gent taking the other Champions League spot. Sporting Charleroi, Royal Antwerp, and Standard will all play in the Europa League. There are still intentions to play the cup final before the start of next season. Waasland-Beveren have been relegated, and will be replaced by either Beerschot VA, OH Leuven, or KVC Westerlo. The latter will be promoted only if the second leg of the Proximus League final is not played.
From next season, there have been changes to the playoff formats. The top 4 will play for the title after the regular season, points still being halved, and they will still meet each other home and away. The teams that finish 5th through 8th will play Playoffs 2. Exact same format as Playoffs 1. The winner will qualify for Europe if themselves or a Playoff 1 participant wins the cup. Otherwise, the lowest rank team in Playoffs 1 will meet the winner of Playoffs 2 for the last European spot.
The Proximus League format has changed slightly as well. There are still 8 teams, meeting each other 4 times each, but there will no longer be period titles, with the tip team from the 28 games being declared champions and will be promoted

As an outsider the new format appears to make more sense than the old format. This is probably not difficult. In fact it was almost as easy to make sense of a typical Donald Trump press conference than it was the old format.
One quick note. The format for next season is a one-off, with the format from this season coming back in 2021-22.

What is the situation about Standard not getting license? Solved? Postponed?
Standard, along with Mouscron and KV Oostende (the other two Pro League teams not to obtain a professional license) have all obtained their licenses. Standard also obtained a UEFA license, so they will compete in Europa League qualifying next seasonrpo.castro wrote: ↑Fri May 15, 2020 21:01 What is the situation about Standard not getting license? Charleroi to Europa League (maybe even group stage) looks like a great result for them.

The Belgian league will expand to 18 teams for next season and the season after. It will go back to 16 in 2022/2023

Because Waasland Beveren sued the pro league as they felt they didnt deserve to be relegated. The pro league kept ignoring the courts' decision but they finally budged as they had to 5 mil € for every matchday played without Waasland-Beveren.
They did not really do a Turkey.Turkey finished the season and then decided that there will be no relegation for some stupid reason.Whie Belgium was one of the 1st to cancel their league.Their non-relegation case can actually make sense while Turkey`s is absolutely stupid.
That's true. But still, they decided to expand to 18 one week before the start of the new season !Bulgarian wrote: ↑Fri Jul 31, 2020 18:13 They did not really do a Turkey.Turkey finished the season and then decided that there will be no relegation for some stupid reason.Whie Belgium was one of the 1st to cancel their league.Their non-relegation case can actually make sense while Turkey`s is absolutely stupid.
Yeah, after following this bizarre series of events over the last three months, it's pretty evident that Belgian football has turned into a farce. This was similar to the Netherlands regarding expanding 1A, however there was more to it. If 18 teams (or even 20) were in 1A, what would happen to 1B? They would have less than 8 clubs there (after the votes today, they will have 7, bar another lawsuit). There was talk of adding youth teams like the Netherlands in the Eerste Divisie, but Belgian football doesn't have as much structure to do that. Three teams that were in 1B last season, Roeselare, Virton and Lokeren all did not obtain professional licenses, while four clubs from the Amateur series, RWDM, Deinze, Lierse Kempenzonen, and Seraing got professional licenses. There needed to be 26 professional clubs in order to make the 18 teams in 1A work properly, but there are only 25 clubs with the licenses. Therefore, there was always a no win situation
