Defensa y Justicia beat San Lorenzo 1-0 in the other semi-final. Which hurts Boca's chances of qualifying for the Copa Libertadores because they are behind Boca in the overall table, and Boca most likely needs a team which finish above them to win the cup.

So for Boca to qualify for the Copa Libertadores, they need the following to happen:
1. They finish 6th in the overall table (they are currently 7th), so they must win the last match in the Copa de la Liga Profesional and hope other results go their way.
2. Estudiantes finish in the top 5 in the overall table (they are currently 5th), and win the Copa Argentina.
3. A team in the top 5 in the overall table win the Copa de la Liga Profesional (Boca can no longer win it themselves).

If Boca manage to finish 5th, they only need one of conditions 2 or 3 to happen to qualify. If they manage to finish 4th (still mathematically possible), they qualify outright without any help.

And in Colombia, Atletico Nacional won the Copa Colombia on penalties (2-2 on aggregate) over Millonarios, and won their record 6th cup title (3 more than Millonarios and Independiente Medellín).

Boca today won their last match this season, so were able to keep their Copa Libertadores dreams alive, at least for 1 more day. They need San Lorenzo to not win tomorrow.
San Lorenzo won, so it's official. Boca won't play in the 2024 Copa Libertadores. They will play in the 2024 Copa Sudamericana, first time since 2014.
That also means that, practically, they will not be able to qualify to the 2025 Club World Cup since it will be almost impossible for them to finish in the top 2 CONMEBOL 4-year ranking, right?

No, it's actually still very probable that they will qualify to 2025 Club World Cup, even with the suggested ranking system

Without getting into the specifics of the formula because, well, there is no formula yet, Boca's records in the seasons 2021-2023 are pretty solid: one final (all other finalists are Brazilian), and two round of 16. Remember, all Brazilian teams are ineligible through the ranking formula, so Boca needs to be among the top two of non-Brazilian teams, and if the 2024 champions are one of the teams that won in 2021-2023, there will be 3 places available through the ranking. So it obviously depends on how the non-Brazilian teams fare in 2024, but I would not say it is almost impossible for Boca to qualify.

And of course, we are talking about FIFA, and thus $$$, and they would probably find a way to get at least one of Boca and River to play in this tournament. River Plate's records in 2021-2023 are also good: 1 QF, 2 R16. If they go deep in 2024, they are favorites to get one of the ranking places. Ironically, Boca may be cheering for River to win in 2024 because if they do, it will free up one of the ranking places.

Thanks for the explanation. Great point about Brazilian teams and the impact of River winning and freeing up a spot.

Well, the replies to CONMEBOL's tweet that Boca Juniors have "qualified" (as if it is some sort of achievement) for the Copa Sudamericana is everything you expected: https://twitter.com/Sudamericana/status ... 8008976511

For fairness, Lanus also qualified for the Copa Sudamericana, but they only get fewer than 1/10 of the replies: https://twitter.com/Sudamericana/status ... 8057122273

With 2 games to go
1) Palmeiras 66 +30
2) Botafogo 63 +23
3) Atletico 63 +22
4) Flamengo 63 +14

Gremio and Red Bull have 3 games to play with 59 points each. So theoretically they are still in the race.

Palmeiras are in a great position to win it all. Practically, the need a home win over Flu or at Cruziero. They can also win if the other teams fail to win two games and they get a tie.

https://x.com/cbssportsgolazo/status/17 ... 90815?s=46

Botafogo thought they had won their first game since Oct. 18th after a 97' penalty from Tiquinho...

A win would have taken them within 1 point of league leaders Palmeiras with 2 games remaining...

They conceded in the 99' (!) and are now winless in their last nine matches.

Saudi Arabia to host AFC Champions League Elite – Final Stage

https://www.the-afc.com/en/club/afc_cha ... /xx_1.html

Kuala Lumpur: The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has today confirmed the Saudi Arabian Football Federation (SAFF) as the Host Association for the AFC Champions League Elite – Final Stage for the 2024/25 and 2025/26 seasons.

The Continent’s top 24 clubs will be divided into two leagues of 12 teams across the West and East regions, who will compete in a home and away league format for a place in the Round of 16, where the eight winners will advance to the Final Stage.

In view of the most strategic and game changing reforms ever to be introduced in the history of the Asian club game, the Final Stage – comprising the Quarter Finals, Semi Finals and Final – will be played in single-leg ties in Saudi Arabia.

The decisive battles of the AFC Champions League Elite – Final Stage 2024/25 are scheduled to be held from April 25 to May 4, 2025, with the eventual winners poised to claim the biggest-ever purse prize of USD12 million.

The financial reward is three times more than the USD4 million that the eventual victors of the AFC Champions League™ will receive this season. Similarly, the losing finalist will also receive a threefold increase of USD6 million from the USD2 million for this season’s runners-up.

On September 12, 2023, the AFC had issued an invitation to all its Member Associations (MAs) to submit their Expressions of Interest (EOI) to host the AFC Champions League Elite – Final Stage for a minimum of two (2) seasons starting from 2024/25.

Subsequently, two MAs – the Iraqi Football Association and the SAFF had submitted their EOIs within the stipulated deadline on October 15, 2023.

The SAFF was selected as the eventual host after evaluating the infrastructure and accommodation requirements as well as all other key operational aspects needed to stage a tournament befitting the prestige and stature of the Continent’s newly revamped premier club competition.

In accordance with the interest submitted, the SAFF was also awarded the hosting rights for the next three seasons from 2026/27 to 2028/29 provisionally, subject to the AFC’s review of the SAFF’s performance in the initial seasons and having due regard of the AFC’s general requirements with the hosting of the Competition, whilst also taking into consideration the progressive needs for each season as well as any other expressions of interest received by other AFC MAs.

Gremio won so they have 62 but they are 4 points behind Palmeiras with 6 to play.
Red Bull lost.
With the defeat against Gremio Goiás is relegated. The 4th team to be relegated will be decided between Bahia (41), Vasco (42) and Santos (43). Cruzeiro with 45 aren't mathematical safe yet.

(My surprised face 😮)

Why not alternate between east and west. Like idea of a final 8 to crown champion of Asia but holding it in same place is a joke. Stinks of corruption doesn't it? 💰 💰 💰

Botafogo Tied and Gremio won. Both can be champions and Botafogo is down to 5th.

For all practical purposes, Palmeiras won the championship. It will take a Palmeiras loss plus an Atletico Mineiro win plus a 9 goals delta or 8 goals delta and Atletico scoring 13 goals more than Palmeiras.

Botafogo drew their 5th consecutive match, and are on a 10-match winless streak. They are 5 points behind the leaders and can no longer mathematically win the league (remember they once had a 9-point lead at the top), and are down to 5th place, outside the top 4 for a Copa Libertadores group stage spot. They must win their final match to even have a chance to move back to the top 4.

And the crazy thing due to the massive number of Brazilian teams playing in CONMEBOL club competitions (14 next season). Santos are currently ranked 15th. If they win their final match, there is a chance for them to move up to 14th, which means they qualify for the Copa Sudamericana. On the other hand, if they draw or lose, there is a chance for them to move down to 17th, which means they are relegated to the second division.
