Is it possible for you to do a calculation of how many FIFA points confederations gained or lost from this World Cup? As well as the totals, it would be interesting to see who was taking from others as well, since it just becomes pure gains after the group stage.
Total FIFA-points won per CONFED in group stage and ko stage and for the complete tournament:

Code: Select all

CONFED from group	ko	total

Code: Select all

UEFA -100	127 27

total 0	258	258
FIFA-points won by a CONFED from the other CONFEDS in group stage and ko stage and for the complete tournament:

So, Japan beating Germany and Spain couldn't make the list? Weird.

Yes, Argentineans are not rational alright. A guy scores two goals in a game, both of which were needed to win the match. One of supreme quality, an all time great goal, and another which profanes and subverts the very spirit of the game, putting the ball in the back of the net with his hand, and he gets lauded for the hand.
Ahány ház, annyi szokás = as many houses, as many customs (there is no accounting for tastes). Argentina celebrate Maradona and Messi and England celebrate Beckham and Gary Neville. No problem, only a tiny difference.

@Ed

Thank you very much! :applause: :bouncy:

So Africa were the predators of this World Cup. They seized points from every confederation in the group stage. And were the overall points gain leader by a vast margin.

UEFA was barely able to claw back the great losses of the group stage. We could only take points from CONCACAF, and we took a lot, the big loser of this cup and the only confederation to take an overall loss.

AFC was the only other confederation to make gains in the group stage, largely at the expense of UEFA. They took more points from UEFA than CAF and CONMEBOL combined. But their story ended in the last 16 with a small overall gain.

CONMEBOL overall lost out in the group stage but made good gains in the KO stage to be second best.

One thing I think nobody's mentioned is how awesome it was that the Golden Boot of the tournament was being fought in the Final, and with a few twists and turns well into extra time, since Messi would've won the first tiebreaker over Mbappé (number of assists). I think this was completely unprecedented.

Japan - Spain 31 pts; Japan - Germany 29 pts. The points-difference between both European giants and Japan was not big enough to account for record-high points exchanges.

The human imagination has no limits.
If you want to stay naive, do so. Infantino has made it clear again that money is everything. Qatar has shown that entertainment is more important then some lives. I’d like to think that everything went sportively, but it’s naive not to consider it. There are no objective people. Be naive and soon Putin will rule your country.

One final remark on the biggest group stage points exchanges: 3 of the 5 were realized on the third matchday against complete (Brazil, France) or partial (Portugal) B-teams.

At this championship, the great progress of the African national teams, as well as the Asian ones, is visible. We can certainly expect even more African and Asian players in the strongest European leagues, which will contribute to the further strengthening of these national teams. The next championship on the North American continent will be even better and even more uncertain. It's good that the number of countries is increasing to 48, because there are certainly more than 32 quality national teams in the world today. I am primarily referring to Europe and Africa, but this also applies to Asia and South America. If we add to that that the hosts will be Mexico, USA and Canada, it will be a real spectacle.

Of course?! :?

vs Saudi Arabia conceded 2 goals from 2 shots on goal
vs Mexico clean sheet with 1 shot on goal
vs Poland clean sheet with 0 shots on goal
vs Australia conceded 1 goal from 1 shot on goal
vs Netherlands conceded 2 goals from 2 shots on goal
vs Croatia clean sheet with 2 shots on goal
vs France conceded 3 goals with 5 shots on goal

TOTAL: conceded 8 goals from 13 shots on goal

Golden glove, sure! :sigh:
Still regarding Emiliano Martínez...

The above analysis was without the penalty shootouts

Including the penalty shootouts, he saved 2 of Netherlands' 5 penalty kicks, and against France he saved 1 (with his face by the way, must be a new trend alongside the hair dye) of 3 shots on goal (Tchouameni missed the target)

So Emiliano Martínez's total including penalty shootouts is 13 goals conceded from 21 shots on goal

Golden Glove?! Give him the Butterfingers award instead :sigh:
Records and Statistics:
 Champions League (all 141 participants - 1992/1993 to 2019/2020)
 Europa League (all 215 participants - 2009/2010 to 2019/2020)
 UEFA Youth League (all 162 participants - 2013/2014 to 2019/2020)
