Slavia - Valur Reykjavik 0:0, 1:0 on aggregate.

Slavia celebrates, the women's team will participate in the group stage for the first time in its history. I guess it is safe to say that any point won in the group stage will be quite a success for Slavia.

Arsenal just make it through 3-2 on aggregate against Ajax with a goal from Miedema being the difference. From the reports that i have read sounds like we probably just about deserved it, also taking into account some bad luck in the first leg.

The most bizarre incident seems to have occurred before the match though, when it was found that the goal posts were not wide enough by 20cm and they had to be adjusted (sounds like a company that I used to work for :grin1: ). Also a bit surprising that a club like Ajax would make such an error in the first instance.

Just two more matches await today before we know the full 16 clubs for the draw next week.

A breakdown of the 16 group stage teams:

- 10 teams will make their second straight appearance (the 8 teams from the big 4, Juventus, Benfica).

- The big 4 all have 2/3 teams qualify for the group stage (last season Germany were able to go 3/3 while the others went 2/3).

- Italy go 2/2 and are the only county with multiple teams to have a 100% success rate this season (1/2 last season).

- Besides Portugal (Benfica), Sweden and Switzerland have 1 team for the second season in a row, but with a different team.

- Czechia, Austria and Albania are debut countries and have 1 team this season (replacing Denmark, Iceland and Ukraine from last season).

- All countries with 3 teams have at least 1 team in the group stage (last season Czechia went 0/3).

- Coincidentally, in both seasons, the teams from countries ranked 23 and 27 (Portugal and Ukraine last season, Portugal and Albania this season) are the only countries from outside top 16 to qualify for the group stage.

The draw has just completed for the group stage:-

Arsenal have been drawn against Lyon, Juventus and Zurich. A tricky draw for the other English team Chelsea to, who have Real Madrid from pot 3.
The full draw is on Uefa.com as usual.

Group A: Chelsea (ENG), Paris Saint-Germain (FRA), Real Madrid (ESP), Vllaznia (ALB)
Group B: Wolfsburg (GER), Slavia Praha (CZE), St. Pölten (AUT), Roma (ITA)
Group C: Lyon (FRA, holders), Arsenal (ENG), Juventus (ITA), Zürich (SUI)
Group D: Barcelona (ESP), Bayern München (GER), Rosengård (SWE), Benfica (POR)

Some balance in the draw, in that the weakest 2nd seed Slavia at least got the presumably strongest 4th seed Roma.
Like last year, two very competitive groups with three strong teams.
I hope the six 'weak' teams can play a few more competitive matches than the six 'weak' sides from last year. But with the growth in funds in the big sides, that is probably a forlorn hope.

Looks to me like Chelsea got the hardest team from both pots 2 and 3. Very bad luck. They'll deserve credit just to get out of that group.

It looks like Slavia got a better draw than Rosengard, thus Czechia has a shot to enter top 6 over Sweden - Italy with 2 teams is almost guaranteed a top 6 spot.

Switzerland needs one win from Zurich to enter top 15.

Switzerland needs more than one win. They have 2 teams playing in UWCL this season, so all their points are halved. Their current points are 16.250, and to overtake Iceland and Belarus, currently at 15th and 16th on 18.500, they need 5 match points (x 0.5 = 2.5 coefficient points), so they need either 2 wins and 1 draw. or 1 win and 3 draws, or 5 draws.

Same situation for Albania, currently on 14.000 points. They also need 5 match points to get into top 16.

All countries currently in top 14 are safe, meaning they will have two teams for 2024/25. Portugal enter the top 16 for the first time and rise to 11th with Benfica’s results, while Austria are now 14th after St Polten reach the group stage, and are able to keep 2 teams for another season. Kazakhstan drop out of top 16 and will only have 1 team for 2024/25.

The race for top 16:

15 Iceland 18.500 0/2
16 Belarus 18.500 0/2
---------------------------------------------------------
17 Kazakhstan 18.500 0/2
18 Switzerland 16.250 1/2
19 Albania 14.000 1/1

The race for top 6

5 Sweden 27.000 1/3
6 Italy 26.500 2/2
-------------------------------------------------------------
7 Czechia 25.500 1/3

For Sweden, Rosengård are in a very tough group. In particular, their Pot 4 team, Benfica, finished above the Swedish team Hacken last season. Hacked only had 1 win last season, and if Rosengård repeated this or worse, Sweden may be in trouble.

For Italy, they still have 2 teams, and their points are divided by 2 instead of 3. Roma are in an easy group, but Juventus are in a tough group. As long as both perform as expected, they are still favourites to remain top 6.

For Czechia, Slavia Praha are in Pot 2, so they are “expected” to advance to knockout stage. Their Pot 3 team, St Polten, are also the weakest, and they also have a direct battle with the Pot 4 team Roma. Assuming Italy finish 5th, Slavia will need at least 5 match points (either 2 wins and 1 draw. or 1 win and 3 draws, or 5 draws) to have a chance to catch Sweden.

The group stage for this starts in around 30 mins.

Nice easy start for Arsenal, away to Lyon on MD1 :smile1:
