Getting really concerned for Valencia. I was sure they'd be able to correct the course, but the time is running out and they keep dropping points in games against direct competition for relegation. Today's defeat to Almeria was really damaging.

Jornada 29--just 10 to go to season's end--begins

Fri. 14 April 2100 Rayo 2, Osasuna 1 Rayo is in ninth place; their record of late is 0-5-3; they're now 10 points above the drop. Osasuna is one place and one point ahead of Rayo; Osasuna has qualified for the Final of the Copa del Rey. At halftime it's 2-0 for Rayo. At 40', own goal by Aridane of Osasuna--"el balón entró llorando" is the way they describe this one in Spanish--"the ball went in crying"--ie rolling slowly and with barely enough force to crawl over the line. At 43', Isi Palazón connects with a superb strike from the top of the area to make it 2-0 at the half in Vallecas. 12,726 reported on hand. At 66', Moi Gómez scores for Osasuna from beyond the area--2-1. At 87', Aitor Fernández of Osasuna saves from Pathé Ciss. Rayo holds on to win for the first time in nine games; they pass Osasuna and are tied on points with Athletic.

Sat. 15 April

1400 Villarreal 1, Valladolid 2 Villarreal is now in fifth place, four points back of the last CL spot. Valladolid is two points and one place above the drop. At 2', Amallah gives Valladolid the lead--0-1. At 34', El Yamiq makes it 0-2 for Valladolid.  And it remains 0-2 at halftime. Bit of a surprise this far, wot :!: At 74', it's game on as Capoue scores for Villarreal--1-2. And that's the surprising final score. Valladolid climbs five points and four places above the drop.

1615 Athletic 2, Real Sociedad 0 THE Basque Derby :!: :!: Athletic is in seventh place, 11 points and three places back of la Real, which is in the last CL spot. At 33', Iñaki Williams puts in his own rebound off himself--1-0 for Athletic. And it's still 1-0 at the half in San Mamés Barri. 49,287 reported on hand. La Real puts on an offensive show in the early minutes of the second half, with no joy . . . At 70', Raúl García makes a looooong pass to Iñaki Williams, who fields the pass, moves to shooting distance, and scores--2-0 and the people are singin' :!: Athletic wins; thus they assure themselves sixth or seventh place at the jornada's end. La Real remains fourth.

1830 Betis 3, Espanyol 1 Betis is now in sixth place, six points back of the last CL spot. Espanyol is next-to-last, two points and two places back of the lowest team not in the drop. At 27', Ayoze Pérez scores, assisted by Luiz Henrique--1-0. If Betis wins, they'll be within three points of fourth place . . . At 34', Juan Miranda makes it 2-0. Halftime in the Benito Villamarín. All of a sudden it's "game on," as César Montes puts Espanyol on the board with a "chilena" at 48'--2-1. 45,313 reported on hand; 85' F. reported as the temperature at game time. At 69', Carvalho scores for Betis--3-1, which is the final score. Betis climbs back to fifth place., three points shy of the last CL spot.

2100 Cádiz 0, Real Madrid 2 Cádiz is now four points and four places above the drop. El Real is second, now 13 points back of the leaders and 12 points above the highest team not in a CL spot. Pretty darn great first half by the Cádiz goalie, David Gil--stopped everything but the kitchen sink :!: Scoreless first half in the Nuevo Mirandilla. 19,833 reported on hand. At 72', it's Nacho Fernández who finally puts one by David Gil--0-1. And now the floodgates seem to have opened  Marco Asensio puts one in at 76'--0-2, and that proves to be the final score.

Sun. 16 April

1400 Girona 2, Elche 0 Girona is in mid-table, eight points above the drop. Elche is the "farolillo rojo," 16 points below the lowest team not in the drop. At 45', Castellanos gives Girona the lead--1-0 at halftime in Montilivi. If this holds up, Girona will be in ninth place. 11,114 reported on hand. At 70', Oriol Romeu scores from just beyond the area to make it 2-0 . . . and that's the final score.

1615 Getafe 0, Barça 0 Getafe is three points and three places above the drop. Barça leads LaLiga, 13 points ahead of second-place Real Madrid. Scoreless first half in the Afonso Pérez. Barça playing as though they had never played the game before--horrible :!: :!: Totally out of synch :!: Can they possibly put together a reasonable second half after this nightmare :?: :dontknow: Only positive is that they're not losing . . . yet. ¡Digo :!: Very poor second half splits two points between the teams. :fingal: Really an awful game. "Nos lo habían cambiado al Barça por otro."

1830 Atlético 2, Almería 1 Atleti is in third place, two points back of Real Madrid. Almería is three points and two places above the drop. They have the worst record on the road of any team in LaLiga  0-4-9 :!: At 5', Griezmann gives Atleti the lead--1-0. At 37', Leo Baptistao's shot deflects off José María Giménez and goes in to tie it--1-1. Goal has been attributed as an own goal by Giménez. At 43', Carrasco centers for Griezmann to slam it home--goal disallowed for offside at first, but review says it's a good goal--2-1. Reported 59,204 on hand. After much ado, Atleti has held on to win it--2-1 the final. The way things have worked out, Almería will be in the drop if Valencia wins and will be above the drop if Valencia fails to win.

2100 Valencia 0, Sevilla 2 Times are tough--"en todas partes cuecen habas" :!: Valencia is the top of the drop, two points back of the lowest team not in the drop. Sevilla isn't exactly having a banner year either--they're five points and five places ahead of Valencia. In case of a tie on points, H!H rules when all games among those tied have been played. Should Valencia win this game, Almería would be ahead of Valencia on H2H, as both matches between the two have been played (4-3 in favor of Almería overall). And the first half in Mestalla ends scoreless. At 55', Sevilla takes the lead, as in the confusion after a corner, the ball goes to Badé, who is able to put it into the goal--0-1. At 75', Suso scores from just inside the half moon--0-2 and Sevilla is looking good :!: At 84', Moriba of Valencia sees a red card. And 0-2 is the final. Hugely important win for Sevilla . . . Can Sevilla get another hugely important win on Thurs. when they host Manchester United :?:

Mon. 17 April 2100 Celta 0, Mallorca 1 Celta is in mid-table, now nine points above the drop. Mallorca is two points and two places back of Celta. At 21', Amath gives Mallorca the lead--0-1. Halftime in Balaídos. 13,557 reported on hand. Celta has some chances, but "a veces el balón no entra." Mallorca's win lifts them past Celta to 11th place.

Jornada 30 begins

Fri. 21 April 2100 Espanyol 0, Cádiz 0 Espanyol, next to last, fights for their lives against a Cádiz team that is four points and two places above the drop. Hugely important game for two teams trying to beat the drop. Scoreless first half in Cornellà-El Prat. Almost nothing in the way of goal chances :!: :fingal: 28,512 reported on hand. At 57', a couple of great chances for Espanyol, to include hitting a post. The game ends scoreless, Espanyol having had the most and best chances. Espanyol, at the moment, is top of the drop, while Cádiz is four points above the drop.

Sat. 22 April

1400 Osasuna 3, Betis 2 Osasuna is now in 10th place, five points shy of the last European spot. Betis continues to flirt with the last CL spot--they are fifth, three points back of la Real Sociedad. At 6', Budimir gives Osasuna the lead from in close--1-0. At 11', Budimir scores another--this time with a header--2-0. And at 16', Miranda cuts the margin to 2-1, as he scores in close for Betis. At 41', Moncayola makes it 3-1 from outside the area with deflection included. Halftime in El Sadar, where 19,723 are reported on hand. At 70', Guido Rodríguez heads in for Betis, and Katy bar the door--3-2. Osasuna holds on to win; they climb to eighth place for the moment.

1615 Almería 1, Athletic 2 Almería has a record of 8-2-5 at home, which is sufficient to have them in 17th place, three points and one place above the drop. Their awful road record, 0-4-10, pulls them back toward the drop. Athletic is in the last European spot, three points ahead of Rayo and four points back of Villarreal. At 9', Almería's goalie fails to hold Nico Willams's shot, which trickles in--0-1. That's the score at halftime. At 56', Oscar de Marcos makes it 0-2 for Athletic. At 92', a beautiful shot by Centelles puts Almería on the board--1-2. Probably too little and too late . . . And that's the final.

1830 Real Sociedad 2, Rayo 1 La Real is in the last CL spot, three points ahead of Betis . Rayo is eighth, three points shy of a European spot and a fairly comfortable 13 points above the drop. At 12', Oyarzábal puts the ball in the net, but after review the goal is disallowed for a previous foul--still 0-0. Scoreless first half in Anoeta. 32,054 in Anoeta. At 56', Isi Palazón steals, goes one on one and beats Remiro--0-1. At 59', Sorloth heads in to tie for la Real--1-1. At 81', Carlos Fernández, just in for Sorloth, heads in to give la Real the lead--2-1. And that's the final; la Real remains in fourth place; Rayo drops to ninth.

1830 Valladolid 1, Girona 0 Valladolid climbed to 14th place with their surprising win at Villarreal--they're now five points above the drop. Girona is ninth, five points back of Europe. At 24', Monchu gives Valladolid the lead--1-0. And that's the score at the half in Pucela. And also at full time. Valladolid assures themselves at least a five-point cushion above the dlrop.

2100 Real Madrid 2, Celta 0 El Real trails Barça by 11 points in LaLiga; they're 14 points ahead of the highest team not qualified for the CL. Celta is in lower mid-table, nine points above the drop. At 42', Marco Asensio scores off an excellent assist by Vinicius--1-0, now at halftime. At 48', Militao makes it 2-0. 60,386 reported on hand in the Bernabéu. Real wins it 2-0 and climbs within eight points of first-place Barça. What will Barça do against Atleti tomorrow :?:

Sun. 23 April

1400 Elche 0, Valencia 2 Elche has a lock on last place; they're 14 points back of the next-to-last place team and 17 points back of the lowest team not in the drop. Valencia . . . what a nightmare of a season  their record is 7-6-16, which is good enough to be top of the drop on GD over Espanyol; they're three points back of Almería. Can they beat Elche :?: At 19', Lino scores for Valencia; assist by Cavani--0-1. And at 42', own goal by Verdú of Elche--0-2. And that's the halftime score in the Martínez Valeero. 22,129 reported on hand. Scoreless second half. Valencia is still top of the drop, but they're back of Almería only on H2H.

1615 Barça 1, Atlético 0 Barça has a lead of 11 points over el Real Madrid, but Barça hasn't scored even one goal in their last two games; the league championship could escape them :!:  Atlético is 13 points back of Barça in third place; they're 12 points ahead of fifth-place Betis. Camp Nou is overflowing :!: Got to be well over 90,000 on hand. Barça was lacking the "last pass" in the first half, and didn't manage a shot on goal until the last seconds of the 44th minute, when Ferrán Torres connected with a shot that was just out of the reach of Oblak and inside the post--1-0. Ter Stegen was key in goal once again. Can Barça hang on to this lead :?: :dontknow: Yes, Barça was able to hang on :!: That gives Barça an 11 point lead over el Real with eight games remaining. Oh, yeah: I overestimated  "only" 80.965 attended the game.

1830 Mallorca 3, Getafe 1 Mallorca is in mid-table, 10 points above the drop and six points ahead of 15th place Getafe. At 23', Borja Mayoral gives Getafe the lead . . . with the help of a deflection--0-1. And the half comes to an end in Son Moix. At 56', Kang-In Lee puts in a rebound to tie it for Mallorca--1-1. At 64', Raíllo heads in a corner to give Mallorca the lead---2-1. At the death, Kang-In Lee scores another for Mallorca--3-1 the final, and Mallorca climbs to tenth place.

2100 Sevilla 2, Villarreal 1 With their win in Valencia, Sevilla is now eight points and five places above the drop. They'll be coming off their do-or-die home game against Man. U. in the Europa League. Villarreal is in sixth place, just four points back of the last CL spot. At 34', Rafa Mir scores a wonderful goal from inside the area--how did he do that   :!: At 44', Villarreal has a goal disallowed for offside. And thus we reach the half in the Sánchez Pizjuán--1-0. 29,635 reported on hand. At 54', Pau Torres puts the ball in the net; the goal is at first disallowed, but consultation with VAR confirms the validity thereof--1-1. And at 94', and this is Way Cool, En-Nesyri, the hero of the win over Man. United last Thurs., today comes off the bench to head in the winning goal at 94' :!: :applause: :applause: :applause:

Oh, yeah, Jornada 31 will be played midweek, April 25, 26, and 27, with three games Tues., four games Wed. and three games Thurs.

According to livescores.com no fewer than 8 different Atlético players were booked from the 75th minute onwards in this match :o . Is this correct or not correctly recorded? it seems like a big breakdown in discipline if it is.

I watched the 2nd half of Sevilla vs Villarreal. A few more matches are beginning to appear on our screens on some freeview channels here recently.

XG Goals analysis after 30 games

Xpts

What would be the table if all goal chances had been converted?

Real Madrid woud be on top! Not that Madrid had been that unefficient, it's more Barcelona who have been extremely good defensively speaking (few goal chances conceded and only 9 goals conceded in 30 games!) in spite of a poor efficiency in front. But it"s enough to win some games 1-0 instead of being at 1-1 and this makes the difference at the end.
Otherwise the current top 4 is there for the CL spots.
At the back Valencia so poor in converting their goal chances would comfortably sit in mid table if they scored the goals they were expected to rather than fighting against relegation

It's the eternal Iago Aspas but the most remarkable is the lack of efficiency of the Madrid players (Benzema and Robdrygo mainly)

How time does fly--we kick off Jornada 31 today, 25 April, with the following games

1930 Cádiz 0, Osasuna 1 Cádiz is two points and three places above the drop. Osasuna is in eighth place, five points back of the last European spot. Scoreless at the half in the Nuevo Mirandilla. At 51', Ledesma makes a save, but is hurt in the process. Rubén García gives Osasuna the lead at 62'--0-1. About 83', Osasuna is down to 10 men, as Abde is red-carded. Osasuna wins it and assures themselves that they'll be in eighth place at the jornada's end.

1930 Girona 4     , Real Madrid 2 full time. Girona is in mid-table, eight points above the drop. El Real is second, 11 points back of leader Barça. at 12', Castellanos scores for Girona--1-0. Castellanos scores again at 24'--2-0. At 34', Vinicius cuts the margin to 2-1. Halftime in Montilivi. At 46', Castellanos completes a hat trick--3-1. See if you can guess who scored goal number 4 for Girona. :grin1: Yup, it was Castellanos at 62'--4-1. At 85', Lucas Vázquez cuts the margin to 4-2. And that's the final score. In Spain, the four-goal performance is called a "póker" or "póquer." Next step up is a "re-póker." :grin1:

2200 Betis 0, Real Sociedad 0 Betis is fifth, six points back of the last CL spot. La Real is fourth, leading Betis by those six points. Scoreless first half in the Benito Villamarín. 42,294 reported on hand. And it ends scoreless.

Today's games: Wed. 26 April (Jornada 31)

1930 Atlético 3, Mallorca 1 Atleti is in third place; a win would lift them to within two points of second place Real Madrid. Mallorca is, at the moment, 11th in LaLiga; a win would lift them two places. At 20', Nastasic gives Mallorca the lead--0-1. At 45'+2'', Rodrigo de Paul ties it for Atleti--1-1. Halftime. At 47', Morata gives Atleti the lead--2-1. At 77', Carrasco makes it 3-1. That's the final score; Atleti is two points back of second place Real Madrid; Mallorca, for the moment, is in eleventh place.

1930 Getafe 1, Almería 2 Both are playing to avoid the drop. Getafe is 16th, one point above the drop, while Almería is 17th, above the drop only on H2H vs Valencia. I'll watch this game :!: At 7', Luis Suárez (the Colombian) gives Almería the lead--0-1. At 45'+3', Djéné of Getafe sees a red card. Halftime in the Alfonso Pérez; 10,260 reported on hand. At 58', Luis Suárez scores his second of the evening to make it 0-2. If Almería holds on, it will be their first road win of the season in 15 tries. At 71', Enes Unal assists Borja Mayoral, who scores to put Getafe within a goal--1-2. But Almería holds on for a HUGE win--they pass Getafe and Cádiz and sleep in 15th place.

2200 Celta 1, Elche 0 Celta has a six-point cushion above the drop; Elche has little hope of avoiding the drop, even should they win all their remaining games. Scoreless first half in Balaídos. And it stays scoreless until 90', when Aidoo scores the winner for Celta, which ends the day in 12th place.

2200 Rayo 2, Barça 1 Rayo is in 10th place going into today's action; in the first game of LaLiga this season, they tied Barça 0-0 in the Camp Nou. Barça leads LaLiga; they have a cushion of 11 points over second place Real Madrid going into today's game. At 19', Alvaro García puts one in from some distance; Ter Stegan can't get a hand on the perfectly placed shot to the far post. 1-0 at halftime in Vallecas. At 53', Fran García recovers an errant ball, beats the defenders, beats Ter Stegen, and makes it 2-0. At 83', Lewandowski puts in a loose ball, 2-1 the final. It certainly wasn't Barça's dau :!: Rayo will finish the jornada where they began it--in ninth place. Barça will finish 11 points above Real Madrid, where they started the jornada.

Today's games--Thurs. April 27 (end of Jornada 31)

1930 Valencia 2, Valladolid 1 Valencia is the top of the drop; a win would lift them ahead of Getafe and Cádiz, out of the drop. Valladolid is five points above the drop, which means five points ahead of Valencia. At 6', Valencia gives the ball away to Larin, who scores to give Valladolid the advantage--0-1. And 0-1 at the half. At 60', Diakhaby ties it for Valencia . . . well, sort of--goalie Masip basically lets the ball go past him, and it's 1-1. At 93', Javi Guerra scores what looks like a winner--2-1. And indeed it is :!: The win lifts Valencia to 116th place, two points above the drop.

1930 Villarreal 4, Espanyol 2 Villarreal is in sixth place, two points back of fifth-place Betis and eight points shy of the last CL spot. Espanyol is next-to-last; a win here could lift them out of the drop if other games work in Espanyol's favor. At 45', Puado gives Espanyol the lead--0-1 at the half. At 53', Capoue ties it for Villarreal--1-1. At 63', Parejo gives Villarreal the lead--2-1. At 73', Joselu ties it for Espanyol--2-2. At 80', Jackson puts Villarreal back ahead--3-2. At 92', Capoue ices it with his second goal of the evening--4-2 the final. Villarreal climbs past Betis into fifth place.

2200 Athletic 0, Sevilla 1 Athletic is seventh; a win could lift them as high as fifth. As it turns out, Athletic will pass Betis on GD if they win, but they can't catch Villarreal. Sevilla, in 13th place going into this game, could climb up a place with a win. Scoreless first half in San Mamés Barri. 42,716 reported in attendance. At 90', penalty in favor of Sevilla. Ocampos converts at 92'--0-1. And Sevilla wins it :!:
