Jornada 10 starts tomorrow, Tues. 18 Oct.---What :!: Jornada 9 isn't even complete yet :!: :grin1: --to wit

Tues. 18 Oct.

1900 Sevilla 1, Valencia 1 Sevilla is now two points and four places above the drop. Valencia is in seventh place, but could drop one or two places due to the outcome of the Villarreal-Osasuna game on Monday. At 6', Cavani heads in a long centering pass to give the visitors the lead--0-1. Assist by Foulquier. And it's 0-1 at the half in the Sánchez Pizjuán. Can Sevilla come back to win for the first time at home this season :?: It looked a lot as though Sevilla was dead in the water, but at 86', Lamela volleys in a teammate's effort--1-1. Seven minutes added time. The crowd is screaming . . . Game ends at 104' in a 1-1 tie; what an ending :!: At 100', penalty awarded to Valencia after a lot of time looking at the VAR. Gayá takes the pk, saved by Bono :!: Valencia remains in eighth place; Sevilla climbs to 11th--for the moment, in both cases.

2000 Getafe 2, Athletic 2 Geta is one point and two places above the drop. Athletic is sixth after their home loss to Atleti this past weekend. Athletic already on the scoreboard at 32--0-1; goal by Iñaki Williams. Getafe ties it at 27'--goal by Carles Aleñà. Halftime in the Alfonso Pérez--1-1. At 62', Raúl García gives Athletic the lead--1-2. Munir ties for Geta at 76'--2-2. Athletic will hate having let this one get away, since they were ahead twice. At the moment, they remain in fifth place. Geta climbs one place to 15th, although they are even on points with both Mallorca and Espanyol, trailing these two on GD.

2100 Atlético 1, Rayo 1 Atleti is now third in LaLiga, three points back of second place and six points off the lead; they are ahead of fourth and fifth places only on GD. Rayo is in 10th place, three points above the drop. At 20', Rayo gives the ball away; Griezmann assists Morata, who makes it 1-0. And it's halftime in the Nuevo Metropolitano. If this result holds, Atleti will be even on points with Barça, although they trail on GD. 46,803 on hand for this derby. Rayo putting on some pressure at about 70' . . . Wow, penalty awarded to Rayo at 90' for a handball in the area. Falcao takes the pk  and 1-1 :!: And Rayo holds on for a tie :!: Thus Valencia, Athletic, and Atleti all tie :!: Atleti is alone in third place, but Betis and la Real can pass them tomorrow. Rayo wins a huge point, looking ahead to avoiding the drop.

I watched this one last night, João Félix was not best pleased with being left on the bench again :exclamation: What is happening with him?

Indeed it was, lad. I "just knew" there was no way Falcao would miss the pk. :grin1:

Today, Wed. 19 Oct., is Day Two of Jornada 10 in LaLiga

First, some (obvious) observations about yesterday's games

Nobody won a game yesterday, although the three favorites led in each of them; Athletic actually led twice, and Atlético still led when the clock said 90 minutes. Too many games in too short a time; too much pressure even for those used to it :grin1: ¡Digo!

1900 Cádiz 0, Betis 0 Huge rivalry, with the visitors as huge favorites :!: Betis would pass Atleti and draw even on points with Barça with a win. Cádiz has yet to win at home--their record in the Nuevo Mirandilla is 0-2-3, scoring twice and conceding 11. Wouldn't miss this game for the world :!: :grin1: Oh, yeah, Cádiz would rise above the drop with a win. At 25', Cádiz has their best effort on goal thus far, but Claudio Bravo saves it. Scoreless first half--so far all the games of this jornada have ended up tied--will this be another  18,505 on hand for this game. At about 57', Bravo saves another tough one. Canales on for Betis at 60'. The Panda comes in for Joaquín Sánchez at 67'. But the game ends scoreless. Betis, at the moment, is out of the top four; they'll finish the jornada in fifth place if la Real goes on to beat Mallorca.

1900 Valladolid 4, Celta 1 Valladolid is one point and one place above the drop. Celta is seven places and three points above the drop. Roque Mesa gives the pucelanos the lead at 32'--1-0. Oscar Rodríguez ties it at 43'--yet another tie coming up :?: :?: At 62', Joaquín Fernandez makes it 2-1 for Valladollid. At 74', Sergio León makes it 3-1 for the home team. And at 79', Sergio León scores again--4-1, and we have an authentic blowout :!: The final is 4-1; Valladolid climbs to 11th place, displacing Celta. Halftime in Pucela--1-0.

2000 Real Sociedad 1, Mallorca 0 La Real is on a roll  four wins out of four in the EL and four wins in a row in LaLiga. Mallorca is six places and two points above the drop. Note: kickoff put back to 2015 . . . and now underway :!: And la Real is on the board already at 4', Mikel Merino the scorer. Halftime in Anoeta; la Real will occupy third place if they hold on to win.. Action thick and fast at 58': Sorloth hits the post; Mallorca takes the ball down the field and Amath puts it into the net, but the goal is disallowed by VAR., As the game winds down, Remiro is keeping la Real ahead with great play in goal. La Real holds on and climbs to third place; at the moment, they trail second-place Barça only on GD.

2100 Elche 0, Real Madrid 3 If Elche wins, we'll know that evil spirits are about :!: Elche has yet to win this season, and is 0-2-2 at home. They're the farolillo rojo, five points and three places back of the lowest team not in the drop. El Realísimo leads LaLiga by three points over Barça. They have yet to drop a point away from home. Easy win for Real :?: What are the odds. bugy :question:At 11', Valverde scores from the balcony of the area to give Real the lead--0-1. Still 0-1 at the half. At about 69', Real's goalie, Lunin, saves the furniture. At 75', el Real finally breaks through for a second goal--Benzema the scorer--0-2. At 89', Rodrygo assists Marco Asensio--0-3. That's the final--el Real assures themselves a lead of at least three points over second-place Barça, and will have a bigger lead should Barça fail to beat Villarreal tomorrow.

Today, Thurs. 20 Oct., is Day Three of Jornada 10 in LaLiga; with today's games, we'll be ready to start Jornada 11 on Saturday. Today's games

1900 Almería 3, Girona 2 This is a "win and you're above the drop" special. If Almería wins, they're two points and two or three places above the drop; a tie doesn't do the trick :!: Girona would stay above the drop even with a tie. They could climb as high as 11th place with a win--depending on other outcomes. At 13', Baptistao gives Almería the lead--1-0. Bilal makes it 2-0 at 17'. Great start for Almería to rise above the drop :!: At 38', Embarba scores with a loooong free kick--3-0. Halftime in the Juegos Mediterráneos. Didn't expect a blowout here. Almería has climbed to 12th place . . . at the moment :!: At 47', Riquelme scores from 51 and a half meters to make it 3-1. The españoles joke about the goalie going out to pick grapes--that's pretty much what happened here. Can Girona take advantage of this to get back into the game :?: Well, at 83', VAR penalty in favor of Girona, converted by Stuani--3-2 and GAME ON :!: Girona puts in what looks like the tying goal at about 97', but it's disallowed and Amería wins it 3-2.

2000 Osasuna 1, Espanyol 0 Osasuna comes into this game in a creditable ninth place; a win would move them up a notch. Espanyol is guaranteed to be above the drop even with a loss; a win could lift them as high as 10th. Scoreless first half in El Sadar. At 55', Budimir scores what proves to be the winning goal for Osasuna--1-0 the final. Osasuna passes Valencia and presumably Villarreal, which is losing 3-0 at the half in the Camp Nou; Osasuna is in seventh place.

2100 Barça 3, Villarreal 0 Game of the Jornada :!: Barça will be in second place, win, lose, or tie. They surely do need a morale booster, after the tie at home vs Inter and the loss in the Bernabéu. A win moves them within three points of Real Madrid; a tie at least moves them above la Real Sociedad on points rather than just on GD. The Yellow Submarine comes into today in seventh place . . . but if Osasuna wins today, Villarreal needs at least a point to finish Jornada 10 in seventh place. A win would lift them to sixth place. Villarreal defended very well for the first half hour, but at 31' and at 35', Lewandowski scores for Barça, and at 38', Ansu Fati makes it 3-0 as he puts in the rebound of his own shot off the post. If this holds, Barça is back within three points of Real Madrid. Villarreal has fallen, for the moment, to ninth place. 73,261 in the Camp Nou. Second half pretty much looked as though both teams had decided that the game was over, and not much of note happened.

XG analysis after MD10

xPts analysis suggests that Barcelona have everything to compete for the title but Real Madrid are much more efficient offensively speaking. Madrid scored 25 goals for 22 expected goals, whereas Barça scored 24 goals vs 27 expected. This makes the difference so far.
Very good performances of the two Basque teams as well whereas Sevilla looks like even more depressing in the xPts ranking than in real table.
Atletico rather disappointing as well buth they can still rely on their strong defense

Jornada 11 begins NOT today; starts tomorrow

Sat. 22 Oct.

1400 Rayo 5, Cádiz 1 Rayo is in 10th place, but they're just four points above the drop. Cádiz is next-to-last, two points back of the lowest teams (three of them :!: ) not in the drop. At 30', Ledesma saves the furniture for Cádiz . . . and again at 32'. At 42', Carcelén fouls in the box; after VAR revue, red card for Carcelén and penalty taken and scored by Izi Palazón at 44'--1-0. At 45'+2', Alvaro García scores with a great shot--2-0 at the half. 12,975 reported in Vallecas. At 61', Alcaraz sees a second yellow, and Cádiz is reduced to nine men. :fingal: At 63', Lejeune makes it 3-0 with a great free kick. At 79', Sergio Camello makes it 4-0; assist by Isi Palazón. At 82', an own goal by Balliu of Rayo puts Cádiz on the board--4-1. At 87', Randy Nteka of Rayo sees a red card for a head butt. At 89', Lejeune scores to make it 5-1; assist by Camello. Rayo has their biggest win in like forever :!:

1615 Valladolid 1, Real Sociedad 0 Valladolid has climbed to 11th place, three points above the drop. La Real has won FIVE in a row in LaLiga, climbing to third place. At 11', the VAR giveth, the VAR taketh away. A bit strange, but the VAR takes away a goal seemingly scored by Valladolid when the defense of la Real has a double error on a "centro chut" by Monchu. At 16', Sergio León scores and Valladolid gets to keep this one--1-0. At 31', Remiro saves what woulda been 2-0. At 45', VAR taketh away from Take Kubo, who fired in from outside the area--apparently a foul was spotted before the attack that produced the goal--still 1-0, and still 1-0 at the half. At 83', la Real seems to have scored . . . but Karrikaburu was offside on the play, and VAR taketh away :!: --still 1-0. Valladolid holds on to win, assuring themselves 11th place at the jornada's end. La Real will remain in third place if Betis and Atleti tie tomorrow, but a win for either of these two would leave them in third place.

1830 Valencia 1, Mallorca 2 Valencia is a "una de cal y otra de arena" team--ie their output varies. Now they are eighth, five points back of the last CL spot. Mallorca is 15th, one point ahead of the drop. Scoreless first half in Mestalla--Mallorca hanging tough :!: Valencia's breakthrough comes at 51', as Lino is tripped in the area. Cavani converts the pk at 52'--1-0. 41,199 reported on hand in Mestalla. At 64', Amath is fouled in the Valencia area. Muriqui converts the pk at 66'--1-1. At 83', Mallorca takes the lead :!:  Kang-In Lee scores from in close, with a wee bit of help from a deflection--1-2. EIGHT minutes added time :!: Mallorca holds on to win; climbs to 12th place at the moment.

2100 Real Madrid 3, Sevilla 1 El Realísimo reigns supreme atop LaLiga. Sevilla has climbed to 12th place, but they're just two points above the drop. Can they do an about-face and get something from this game :?: At 5', Sevilla loses the ball in deep; Vini JR. crosses for Modric to score at an angle--1-0. And that's the score at the half. Much as I hate to say it, Sevilla looked very bad in the first half. Can they put anything together to offer a decent second half  59,625 reported on hand. Well, Sevilla might be able to do something--at 54', Lamela ties the game at 1-1. At 79', Rafa Mir loses the ball and el Real is off to the races, Marco Asensio (I think) assisting Lucas Vázquez, who makes no mistake--2-1. And two minutes later, Fede Valverde makes it 3-1 from distance. And that's the final. Sevilla played a very good 20 minutes or so in the second half. "Algo es algo."

Sun. 23 Oct.

1400 Espanyol 2, Elche 2 Espanyol is one point and two places above the drop. Elche is mired in the cellar, six points back of the lowest teams not in the drop. At 11', Pere Milla connects with a header from the top of the area--great goal :!: --0-1. At 24', perhaps offside, Javi Puado puts in a cross to tie it--1-1. At 42', Palacios of Elche sees a red card, rescinded after the ref consults VAR. It's 1-1 at the half. 17,560 reported on hand. At 67', Braithwaite scores for Espanyol, cutting through the area--2-1. At 82', Gonzalo Verdú ties it for Elche with a volley inside the area--2-2. Espanyol bounces one off the woodwork as the game ends at 93'+--2-2 the final.

1615 Betis 1, Atlético 2 Or #5 hosts ##4. Each of these two is on 20 points. Atleti leads by one in GD. The Benito Villamarín is gonna be rockin' :exclamation: Scoreless first half in the Benito Villamarín, where 50,179 are on hand. At 54', Griezmann takes a corner; the ball grazes a defender and goalie Rui Silva and goes in :!: --0-1 for Atleti. At 71', Griezmann's shot slips through the wicket and goes in--0-2. Rui Silva is NOT a happy man :!: At 84', Fekir scores with a free kick from the balcony of the area--1-2 and game on :!: At 91', Betis hits the crossbar. At 92', Rui Silva saves from Joao Félix. And Atleti wins it, climbing to third place, while Betis will be fifth should Athletic not win in the Camp Nou later.

1830 Girona 1, Osasuna 1 Girona is now top of the drop. Osasuna is in the last (probable) European spot. Kike Barja gives Osasuna the lead at 37'--0-1. Girona ties it just before halftime in Montilivi---1-1; goal by David López at 45'+1'. And the game ends tied. Girona, at the moment, is above the drop on GD ahead of Getafe, both at 9 points.

1830 Villarreal 2, Almería 1 The Yellow Sub comes off a hiding in the Camp Nou. Almería is above the drop by one point and five places :!: Gonzalo Meleto gives Almería the lead with a goal from inside the area--0-1. Halftime. Can the Yellow Submarine turn this around :?: Wow :?: :?: At 56', Alex Baena ties the game with a header off a corner, but he then exposes a "thank you for support" message on his under-shirt, for which he sees a second yellow and is sent off :!: So it's 1-1 and Villarreal will play on with 10 men. An epic struggle down to the final whistle :!: At 94', the last minute to be played, Jackson of Villarreal breaks free one-on-one with Almería's goalie, and he scores the winner--2-1 and Villarreal takes seventh place and is tied on points for sixth with Athletic; the latter will now play at Barça, to wit

2100 Barça 4, Athletic 0 Can Barça repeat their success against Villarreal :?: Athletic is sixth and unbeaten on the road. Barça scores at 12'--Dembélé--, 18'--Sergi Roberto--, and 22'--Lewandowski to take a 3-0 lead into the second half. At 73', Ferrán Torres makes it 4-0, which is the final score.

Mon. 24 Oct. 2100 Celta 1, Getafe 1 Celta must shake off their big loss at Valladolid--they´re just two points above the drop. Getafe is one point and one place above the drop. At 43', Enes Unal scores with a wonderful free kick from outside the area--0-1. If Getafe wins it, they'll climb to 13th place. Halftime in Balaídos--0-1; 9,774 reported on hand. At 53', Soria saves the furniture for Getafe. At 89', Aspas centers and Aidoo heads in, even though Soria gets a hand on the shot--1-1. That's the final; the point for the tie is enough to lift Getafe above the drop by a point; Celta moves up to 13th place.

Indeed. I saw Rayo beat Osasuna 7-0 when both were in second division about 1972 give or take a year, but Rayo's wins by a bunch of goals in First Division have been few and far between. Oh, yeah, I also attended Rayo 6, Cádiz 0 in Vallecas in 1971, also in second division.
