Jornada 21 begins

Fri. 10 Feb. 2100 Cádiz 2, Girona 0 Cádiz is top of the drop, one point back of Valencia :!: Their home record is 2-5-4--can they win this one :?: Girona is a relatively comfortable 11th in LaLiga, five points above the drop. At 6', Ocampo assists Escalante, who fires it in with a little help from a deflection--1-0. At 34', Sergi Guardiola scores to make it 2-0 for Cádiz. The East Wind--"el Levante" is legendary in Cádiz--the East Wind almost caused this game to be postponed. At the half, 2-0 in the Nuevo Mirandilla. If Cádiz goes on to win, they'll advance to 15th place , and at least for the moment they'll be above the drop. 14,875 reported on hand. Cádiz holds on to win.

Sat. 11 Feb.

1615 Almería 2, Betis 3 Almería is 14th in LaLiga, three points above the drop. Only Barça, Real Madrid, and Athletic have a better home record than Almería's 6-1-3, but no team has a worse road record than Almería: 0-3-7  Betis has lost three of their last four games, and is now in seventh place, four points shy of the last CL spot. At 6', Rodri puts in a rebound off the post to give Betis the lead--0-1. At 27', Luis Suárez ties for Almería--1-1. At 42', Canales puts Betis back ahead with a sweeeeet vaaelina (chip) over the goalie--1-2. Great first half :!: 14,288 reported on hand. At 62', Samu Costa puts in a rebound to tie it--2-2. At 70', Andrés Guardado heads in a corner, and Betis retakes the lead--2-3. Betis lost last weekend at home 3-4; today they win 2-3 on the road. Six scored, six given in two games :!: Betis, at the moment, is back in fifth place. 35,150 reported on hand.

1830 Sevilla 2, Mallorca 0 in progress. Sevilla is 16th in LaLiga, just two points above the drop. Mallorca, on the other hand, is having a great season, coming off a win over Real Madrid; they're in 10th place, nine points above the drop and just three points back of the last European spot. At 28', En-Nesyri runs onto a long pass and scores--1-0. At 40', Bryan Gil makes it 2-0. No goals ever seem "easy," but if one ever did, this was it :!: Halftime in the Sánchez Pizjuán.

2100 Valencia 1, Athletic 2 Valencia is having an awful season thus far: they're one point and one place above the drop. Athletic is 1-1-3 in their last five games; they've dropped to eighth place, two points back of the last European spot. Their road record is a poor 2-3-4. At game time, Valencia must win if they're to be sure of finishing the jornada above the drop. And they're off to a good start--Castillejo scores at 17' to give los ché the lead--1-0.  What a goal by Nico Williams at 30' to tie it :!: :!: --1-1, now at the half in Mestalla. At 72', Sancet scores from inside the area to give Athletic the lead--1-2. Can Valencia come back from the dead :?: :fingal: :fingal: About 89', Unai Simón makes a fantastic save to keep Athletic ahead--still 1-2. And 1-2 is the final--Valencia will finish the jornada as top or next-to-top of the drop. Athletic is sixth at the moment, but if all results go against them tomorrow, they could drop a bit . . .

Sun. 12 Feb.

1400 Getafe 1, Rayo 1 A "lesser" derby, as Madrid's two "have-nots" meet. Geta is next-to-last, two points back of the lowest team not in the drop. Rayo is having, for them, a great season: they are in fifth place, just three points back of the last CL spot; more important to Rayo is their 13-point cushion above the drop. Getafe playing better in the early going . . . At 38', it's Rayo that goes ahead on an own goal by Arambarri of Getafe off a corner--0-1. Halftime in the Alfonso Pérez. At 50', handball penalty in favor of Getafe. Borja Mayoral takes the pk at 51' and shoots over the net--still 0-1. At 54', Aleñà of Getafe sees a second yellow. At 65', Munir's shot is headed off the line by Rayo defender Lejeune. At 77', Dimitrievski's goal kick is deflected into the net by Enes Unal--1-1. At 86', handball pk awarded to Rayo. RDT's pk is saved by Soria--still 1-1. Eight minutes added time . . . And it ends 1-1, not what either team wanted :!: Getafe stays next-to-last; Rayo is in sixth place at the moment; could fall behind Villarreal.

1615 Celta 0, Atlético 1 Celta comes off their 3-4 win at Betis; Celta is now 12th, four points above the drop. Atleti is in the last CL spot, three points ahead of Rayo and 18 points shy of the league lead. Scoreless first half in Balaídos, where 15,842 are on hand. At about 56', a truly amazing save by Oblak--the ball was maybe within a couple of inches of crossing the line. At 70', Savic of Atleti sees a red card. At 73', the free kick given when Savic saw red is blasted off the crossbar. Still 0-0. At 75', Oblak saves. At 85', Oblak saves :!: :!: LEAVIN' IT LATE :!: :!: . . . at 89', Memphis Depay puts in Carrasco's shot cum pass--0-1. And Atleti wins it; player of the game is the goalie of a thousand saves, Jan Oblak :applause: :applause: :applause:

1830 Valladolid 0, Osasuna 0 Two teams having better-than-usual seasons meet. Valladolid comes off an away win at Real Sociedad; Valladolid is now four points and five places above the drop. Osasuna is ninth, two points back of the last European spot. Scoreless first half in Pucela. 21,044 reported on hand. At 54', Chimy Avila of Osasuna hits the post. Game ends scoreless. Osasuna is ninth, and will be ninth when the jornada ends.

2100 Villarreal 0, Barça 1 Villarreal has lost two in a row to lie in sixth place, four points back of the last CL spot. Barça leads LaLiga by eight points over Real Madrid; they've won five in a row and 10 of 11. Pedri scores at 18' after a "pared" ( give-and-go) with Lewandowski--0-1. That's the score at the half in the Estadio de la Cerámica. Barça looked pretty good in the first half, but a lot less so in the second half. A Herculean effort saw their holding on to win it--with a little luck thrown in, of course. Their lead over Real Madrid grows to 11 points, which will likely be cut back to eight on Wednesday.

Mon. 13 Feb. 2100 Espanyol 2, Real Sociedad 3 Espanyol is 15th, two points above the drop. La Real is third; after their home loss to Valladolid, they are still seven points ahead of the highest team not in a CL spot. At 4', Remiro saves. At 10', Oyarzábal's shot is saved by the Espanyol goalie, Alvaro Fernández. At 23', Take Kubo scores with a screamer from just inside the area--0-1. And that's the score at halftime in Cornellà-El Prat. At 51', Sorloth makes it 0-2. Espanyol is totally outclassed :!: At 63', Cabrera of Espanyol puts one into his own net--"él no quería," and it's 0-3. At 74', Darder cuts the margin to 1-3 as he puts in a rebound off the crossbar--1-3. And of a sudden, Espanyol is back in the game :!: At 87', Oliván makes it 2-3, and Katy bar the door :!: At 94', Cabrera sees a second yellow. And la Real holds on in what seemed like an easy game until very late. This leaves Espanyol one point and one place above the drop.

Wed. 15 Feb. 2100 Real Madrid-Elche This weird scheduling is due to Real Madrid's participation in the Club World Cup--they will likely play in that event in one of the usual slots in LaLiga on Saturday, 11 Feb. El Real is second in LaLiga, now eight points back of Barça. Elche won for the first time all season last time out, a 3-1 win over no less than Villarreal. Elche is still buried in last place, 11 points back of the lowest team not in the drop . . . but where there's life, there's hope :!: ¡Digo :!:

Jornada 22 starts  (although jornada21 is not over yet :!: )

Fri. 17 Feb. 2100 Girona 6, Almería 2 Girona is 11th in LaLiga on GD over Sevilla and Valladolid. Almería is two points and four back of Girona. Goals galore in Montilivi :!: :upset: Castellanos at 8', Tsygankov at 34', Riquelme at 36', Javi Hernández at 43', Iván Martín at 77', and Stuani at 79' were the scorers for the home team; Ramazani at 66' and El Bilal Touré scored for the visitors. Girona locks in 11th place with the win. Blowout of the season :?:

Sat. 18 Feb.

1400 Real Sociedad 1, Celta 1 La Real is third, three points back of Real Madrid (the latter with a game in hand) and eight points ahead of Betis, which is the team just back of the CL spots. Celta is 14th, three points above the drop. Celta comes out strong, but at 5' it's Oyarzábal on the counter who makes it 1-0 for la Real. Game promises to be good :!: Still 1-0 at the half. 29,312 reported on hand in Anoeta. At 75', Renato Tapia of Celta sees two yellows, and nobody can figure out why :!: Celta certainly had their chances to score in the second half, but it was an own goal by Le Normand at 93' that brought the visitors a point--1-1 the final.

1615 Betis 2, Valladolid 1 Betis is in fifth place, four points shy of the last CL spot. Valladolid is 13th, four points above the drop. Betis strikes early--Juanmi Jiménez gives them the lead at 2'--1-0. At 30', Larín ties for Valladolid--1-1. At 45'+2', penalty in favor of Betis, converted by Canales at 45'+4'--2-1 at the half in the Benito Villamarín. 51,396 reported on hand. Betis holds on to win it--2-1 the final.

1830 Mallorca 4, Villarreal 2 Mallorca is in mid-table, eight points above the drop and three points back of eighth place Villarreal, which has lost two of their last three games. Villarreal trails the last European spot by one point. At 20', Kadewere gives Mallorca the lead after a error by Villarreal's defense--1-0. At 22', Trigueros of Villarreal is shown a red card, and it's all uphill from here for the Yellow Submarine. Should this result hold, Mallorca will be ahead of Villarreal on H2H, since Mallorca won at Villarreal in the first half of the season. At 43', El Comandante Morales scores to tie for Villarreal, but at 45', Mallorca goes back ahead on a header by Dani Rodríguez--2-1. Halftime in San Moix; 13,957 reported on hand. At 50', Chukwueze ties with a "vaselina" after Mallorca loses the ball--2-2. Quite a game, as Mallorca retakes the lead on a header off a corner by Dani Rodríguez, his second of the evening--3-2. And now 4-2, as Muriqi scores at 63'.

2100 Osasuna 0, Real Madrid 2 Osasuna is two points and two places back of the last European spot. El Real, with a game in hand, is second, 11 points off the lead and 11 points ahead of the highest team not in a CL spot. Scoreless first half in El Sadar. 21,668 reported on hand. At 78', Valverde scores to give Real Madrid the lead--0-1. At 89', Vini Jr. ices the win for Real; 0-2. Whoops--not :!: VAR says no goal. But at 92', Marco Asensio scores one that counts--now 0-2 for Real, and that's the final.

Sun. 19 Feb.

1400 Elche 0, Espanyol 1 Elche beat Villarreal for their first win of the season last time out; their game in hand is against Real Madrid. They are 12 points back of Espanyol, the lowest team not in the drop. Scoreless first half in the Martínez Valero. 18,963 on hand. At 81', Elche is down to 10 men. At 92', Sergi Darder strikes for Espanyol from just outside the area--0-1; huge goal for a needy Espanyol; they win it and are at 24 points; tied with Celta and Valladolid.

1615 Rayo 1, Sevilla 1 Rayo is having perhaps their best season ever in first division: they are currently sixth, five points back of the last CL spot. Sevilla has been having an awful time of it, but three wins in their last four games have lifted them from the drop to 12th place, four points above the drop. At 29', Suso's shot is deflected in--0-1. And 0-1 at the half. Can Rayo get back into this game :?: 13,294 on hand. At 65', Lejeune, unmarked, heads in a corner to tie it--1-1. Each team puts in a goal that is disallowed in the waning moments, and 1-1 is the final score.

1830 Atlético 1, Athletic 0 The famous homonym game :!: :grin1: Atleti is in the last CL spot; Athletic is seventh, six points back of Atleti. Scoreless first half in the Nuevo Metropolitano. 61,617 on hand. At 73', Griezmann strikes--1-0. The goal holds up, and Atleti assures themselves of a four-point lead over Betis in the struggle for CL spots.

2100 Barça 2, Cádiz 0 Barça leads LaLiga; the lead will probably be eight points over Real Madrid after the latter's home game vs Elche today (Wed.). Cádiz has won two of their last three to climb two points and two places above the drop. Not one of Barça's more polished performances, but it was sufficient for a two-goal win in front of 72,010 in the Camp Nou. Goals by Sergi Roberto at 43' and Lewandowski at 45'+1'. Barça's lead atop LaLiga is eight points. Cádiz played reasonably well. Whether they stay above the drop depends on tomorrow's Getafe-Valencia game.

Mon. 20 Feb. 2100 Getafe 1, Valencia 0 This is the "Get out of the drop" special, as Valencia is the top of the drop, one point and one place ahead of 19th place Getafe. At 10', David Soria saves the furniture for Getafe with one GREAT save and another merely good save. At 43', Valencia's goalie, Mamardashvili, makes two good saves, but the first half ends scoreless. A tie would leave both of these teams in the drop. At 47', David Soria makes another good save. At 82', Borja Mayoral puts in a loose ball to give Getafe the lead and lift them out of the drop on GD. At 87', Valencia has a goal disallowed for offside. Getafe holds on to win and climb out of the drop.

The "game in hand" for Real Madrid--from Jornada 21

Real Madrid 4, Elche 0 At 8', Marco Asensio scores for Real. Benzema converts a pk at 31'--2-0. And Benzema converts another pk at 45'+1'--3-0 at the half. At 80', Modric makes it 4-0. That's the "no surprises" final score. El Real is eight points back of Barça and seven ahead of la Real Sociedad.

Looks like someone has been paying the vice president of referees according to MARCA.
Theyll probably get away with it too.

The Top hasn't changed with Jornada 22 complete for the teams at the top, at least as far as seventh place, to wit

1. Barça--------------59 points; +45-7 Next at Almería.
2. Real Madrid---------51 points; +46-17 Hosts Atlético.
3. Real Sociedad-------43 points; +32-22 At Valencia.
4. Atlético------------41 points; +31-17 At Real Madrid.
---------------------------------------------
5. Betis---------------37 points; +29-23 At Elche.
6. Rayo---------------34 points; +29-24 At Cádiz.
7. Athletic-------------32 points; +31-23 Hosts Girona.

The Drop is a different story, with the huge Getafe-Valencia game today--both are in the drop going into this game; one of the two can climb above the drop with a win in this game, while a tie would leave both in the drop.

Jornada 23 of LaLiga kicks off

Fri. 24 Feb. 2100 Elche 2, Betis 3 Elche is buried in last place, 13 points back of the lowest team not in the drop. Betis is in fifth place, four points back of the lowest team in the CL spots, which is Atlético. At 6', VAR shows that Elche has won a penalty; converted by Fidel Chaves at 7'--1-0. At 9', Lucas Boyé of Elche scores--2-0 unless VAR takes it away. Goal is good--2-0 for the home team  :!: Badía saves--everything going Elche's way thus far :!: Halftime in the Martínez Valero--2-0 :!: The story of the first half: "No hay enemigo pequeño," which could be translated as "There are no small enemies," or in a soccer context, "There are no easy games :!: " Is Betis gonna be able to get back into this would-be huge upset :?: 20,643 reported on hand. At 51', Joaquín Sánchez comes close for Betis. At 53', Badía saves. At 57', after VAR consultation, Magallán of Elche sees a red card, and Elche must hold on with 10 men. At 64', Ayoze Pérez is fouled in the Elche area--penalty is clear; Borja Iglesias converts at 65'--2-1 and game on :!: At 68', Betis is even--Miranda with a "centro-chut" seems to have put the ball in the net--but did the Panda get a touch on it :?: In any case, the goal stands--2-2 :!: Wow--no end of excitement here :!: At 86', handball penalty in favor of Betis. The Panda takes the pk at 88', and Badía makes an incredible save--still 2-2. This game just won't quit :!: At 94', another handball pk awarded to Betis; called against Enzo Roco, who was guilty of the first handball pk, so he is red carded. Willan José converts at 95'--2-3 for Betis, and that, ladies and gentlemen, is the ball game :exclamation:

Sat. 25 Feb.

1400 Espanyol 2, Mallorca 1 Espanyol is 13th, but they are only above the drop due to a last-minute goal at Elche last time out. Can they beat Mallorca, a team enjoying a very good season :?: Mallorca is now 8th, one point back of the last European spot. At 22', Aleix Vidal centers for Braithwaite to score--1-0. At 41', Muriqi scores from the top of the area to tie it--1-1. Halftime in Cornellà-El Prat. 21,403 reported on hand. At 51', Melamed assists Braithwaite, who scores his second of the day--2-1. At 70', Pacheco saves the furniture for Espanyol. The home team holds on to win; Espanyol climbs one place in the standings--for the moment.

1615 Cádiz 1, Rayo 0 Cádiz is top of the drop on GD vs Almería and Getafe. Rayo is in sixth place, seven points back of the last CL spot and three points above the highest teams not in European spots. Scoreless first half--and very few scoring opportunities--in the Nuevo Mirandilla. At 74', Guardiola gives Cádiz the lead, as Rayo's defense goes to sleep--1-0. And Cádiz wins it and thus rises, for the moment anyway, above the drop. VERY poor game by Rayo.

1830 Real Madrid 1, Atlético 1 The Derby of the Capital :!: El Realísimo comes off the 2-5 win at Liverpool; el Real is second in LaLiga and 10 points ahead of fourth-place Atleti. Scoreless first half in the "New Bernabéu." At 64', red card for Correa for an elbow. Go figure--at 78', it's Atleti that breaks the ice, as José María Giménez heads in a free kick by Griezmann--0-1. Oblak makes a couple of excellent saves, but at 85',Alvaro Rodríguez ties it with a header off a corner--1-1. And Atleti holds on to the tie--1-1 is the final.

2100 Valencia 1, Real Sociedad 0 Valencia is having a wretched season--they're next-to-last after losing at Getafe; they're two points back of the lowest team not in the drop. La Real is in third place, 16 points off the lead after tying at home against Celta; la Real is six points above the highest team not in a CL spot. Valencia takes the lead at 40' on an own goal by Zubeldia--1-0. And it's 1-0 at the half; Valencia will be above the drop if the lead holds up; but of course that could change over the next two days. Valencia does indeed climb past Getafe and Almería for the moment.

Sun. 26 Feb.

1400 Athletic 2, Girona 3 Athletic is in seventh place after going 2-0-4 in their last six games. Girona comes off the 6-2 win over Almería; they're five points above the drop and five points below the last European spot. At 4', Aleix García gives the visitors the lead--0-1.  At 19', De Marcos of Athletic puts one into his own net. Not exactly the start that Athletic wanted . . .--0-2 :!: Quite a game :!: Athletic has a goal disallowed for offside by the narrowest of margins, and then at 35', Yuri Berchiche scores from just outside the area--game on :!: . . ..1-2 :!: But the fun never stops :!: At 45'+1', Vesga of Athletic puts the ball in has own net off a free kick--1-3 at the half in San Mamés Barri :!: 42,816 reported on hand. At 89', pure giveaway by Girona to Raúl García, who puts in Athletic's second goal--2-3 and . . . Game On :!: At 93', Raúl García heads it . . . almost in--still 2-3. And Girona holds on--by the skin of their teeth.

1615 Celta 3, Valladolid 0 Celta is two points and four places above the drop. Valladolid is even on points with Celta but trails them on GD. Celta is running roughshod over Valladolid in the early going, but has scored just once: Seferovic, in close, headed in at 17'--1-0. It's been all Celta, and at 32', Gabri Veiga makes it 2-0. Halftime in Balaídos. At 62' questionable VAR decision to disallow a goal by Valladolid for offside. At 64', Gabri Veiga scores his second of the game as he puts in a rebound--3-0, which is the final score. Depending on other results, Valladolid could end the jornada in the drop.

1830 Almería 1, Barça 0 Almería comes off the 6-2 loss at Girona, but Almería is much tougher at home (6-1-4) than away (0-3-8). Barça leads LaLiga by eight points over second-place Real Madrid; Barça will be coming off their do-or-die game at Man. U. on Thurs. Announcer points out Barça's being behind at the half--goal by El Bilal Touré at 24'--to "lack of intensity" for Barça--basically, they've seemed a day late and a dollar short on just about everything. Hangover from the Man. U. loss certainly has a lot to do with this. So  can Xavi put 'em back together in the second half :?: Stay tuned. No, nothing much changed; Almería was able to hang tough and they sluffed off the pressure time and again. So Barça drops a point with respect to Real Madrid instead of gaining two point. Almería is definitely above the drop as of the end of Jornada 23.

2100 Sevilla 2, Osasuna 3 Sevilla is 3-1-1 in their last five games in LaLiga; they're now 12th, seven points back of the last European spot and three points above the drop. Osasuna is in mid-table, two points back of the last European spot and eight points above the drop. At 18', seconds after Bono had saved, David García heads in the following corner--0-1. At 22', Kike Barja beats Bono at the near post, but after VAR revision, the goal is disallowed. At 45'+1', Bono saves what coulda been the 0-2; thus it's 0-1 at halftime in the Sánchez Pizjuán. At 48', wonderful save by Aitor of a header by En-Nesyri--still 0-1. If Osasuna hold on to win this game, they'll be in seventh place, passing Athletic. At 63', Gudelj of Sevilla scores from waayy out beyond the balcony of the area--1-1. At 67', Bono tries to punch the ball away from his own goal, but hits it off Sevilla's Fernando and it crosses the goal line. VERY unusual goal and 1-2--Osasuna back on top :!: But at 78', En-Nesyri scores on a solo job; you gotta see it to appreciate it--2-2. At 85', Abde gives Osasuna the lead again, with a very nice goal inside the area--2-3; this turns out to be the game winner for Osasuna.

Mon. 27 Feb. 2100 Villarreal 2, Getafe 1 The Yellow Submarine has lost four in a row in LaLiga; they're now two places and one point back of the last European spot. Getafe is euphoric after beating Valencia to rise above the drop, albeit only on GD. At 9', Enes Unal heads in a cross by Djéné--0-1, and AT THE MOMENT Getafe is above the drop :!: At 43', Pepe Reina saves what was almost 0-2, and then at 44', Chukwueze ties it as he puts in a rebound that escapes Soria--1-1. Halftime in the Estadio de la Cerámica, with Getafe back in the drop. 13,090 reported on hand. At 52', Villarreal takes the lead on a goal by El Comandante Morales--2-1. Villarreal wins it to break their losing streak and climbs to seventh place, back of sixth-place Rayo on GD. Getafe is next to last with this result.

One game is left to play in Jornada 23; that game will decide both The Top and The Drop. Villarreal can rise to sixth place with a win, while Getafe can rise above The Drop with a win.

Jornada 24 begins

Fri. 3 March 2100 Real Sociedad 0, Cádiz 0 La Real is in third place; needs a win to be sure to hold that place at the Jornada's end. Cádiz is 16th and oh-so-happy to be above the drop. Scoreless first half in Anoeta. 28,733 reported on hand. Game ends scoreless. Huge point for Cádiz, which climbs two places to 14th.

Sat. 4 March

1400 Getafe 3, Girona 2 Getafe is now next-to-last; must win this game if they're to rise above the drop during this jornada. Girona is in mid-table after 6-2 win over Almería and 2-3 win at Athletic; they're four points shy of the lowest European spot. At 2', Getafe steals the ball in the area and Enes Unal scores--1-0 with a VERY long way to go :!: At 12', handball penalty in favor of Getafe. Enes Unal converts at 14'--2-0. At 43', Borja Mayoral makes it 3-0, as he scores from a step inside the area. Halftime in the Alfonso Pérez. Can Getafe hold up and thus rise above the drop :?: 9,802 reported on hand. At 54', Castellanos cuts the margin to 3-1. At 80' game on, as Miguel Gutiérrez scores from just outside the area to cut the lead t 3-2. Getafe holds on and passes Valencia, Valladolid, and Almería--at least for the moment.

1615 Almería 0, Villarreal 2 Almería comes off their win over Barça; they're now two points and three places above the drop. Villarreal broke a four-game losing streak last time out. Can they win in Almería :?: Streaming connection seems to be down. :dontknow: Scoreless first half. Streaming still not functioning. :fingal: Streaming working for second half. Gerard Moreno, on as a sub, scores at 76' from inside the area, assisted by Chukwueze--0-1. At 88', Chukwueze centers for el Comandante Morales to volley home--0-2. And that's the final score. Villarreal takes over sixth place for the moment. Almería could fall into the drop, although it's unlikely.

1830 Mallorca 0 Elche 1 Mallorca is in mid-table, three points shy of the lowest European spot and eight points above the drop. Elche is mired in last place, 15 points back of the lowest team not in the drop. Scoreless first half in Son Moix, where 14,065 are reported on hand. Elche comes very close to scoring at 82'. Wow--at 88', Lucas Boyé gives Elche the lead :!: :!: "No hay enemigo pequeño."--1-0. At 97', Muriqi of Mallorca puts the ball in the net, and it looks as though Elche has not won after all . . . but as we all know  VAR taketh away :!: . . . and that was the decision. There was a rather blatant foul by Mallorca in the workup to the goal . . . So Elche has won away from home for the first time this season; this was only their second win all season :!:

2100 Atlético 6, Sevilla 1 in progress. Atleti is in the last CL spot, two points ahead of Betis. Sevilla is 14th, two points and four places above the drop in what has been a nightmare season for them. This is 613 appearance of Simeone as Atleti's "mister"--one more now than Luis Aragonés. At 23', Memphis gives Atleti the lead with a breakaway--1-0. At 26', Memphis scores again, this time from the center of the balcony of the area--2-0. If Atleti holds on to win, they pass la Real Sociedad and sleep in third place :!: At 39', Atleti's defense is a bit tentative and En-Nesyri cuts the lead--2-1. Halftime in the Nuevo Metropolitano. At 53', AG serves up a "Griezmann special"--3-1, from just outside the area. 57,737 reported on hand. At 69', Sevilla's defense doesn't cover their weak side and Carrasco scores from there "más solo que la una"--4-1. At 72', penalty in favor of Sevilla, as Llorente fouls in the area. Rakitic takes the pk at 74' and hits the post--still 4-1. At 76', Morata makes it 5-1. And at 92', Morata scores another--6-1  :!:

Sun. 5 March

1400 Valladolid 2, Espanyol 1 Valladolid is one place and one point above the drop. Espanyol has climbed to 12th place, four points above the drop. At 25', Iván Sánchez scores from beyond the area--1-0. Halftime in Pucela, where 19,212 are reported on hand. At 62', Gonzalo Plata assists Alvaro Aguado, who makes it 2-0 for the home team. At 87', Braithwaite cuts the margin to 2-1--game on :!: Valladolid holds on to win and catch Espanyol on points--GD will separate these two at season's end.

1615 Barça 1, Valencia 0 Barça comes off their second loss in LaLiga this season; they lead second-place Real Madrid by seven points. Valencia is the top of the drop after beating la Real Sociedad; they are one point back of Valladolid going into this jornada. At 16', Busquets assists Raphinha, who heads in--1-0. Barça's control of the ball has looked sub-par; Valencia is getting chances to equalize, but hasn't been able to make anything of their chances. Halftime in the Camp Nou. 89,644 reported on hand. Very poor second half by Barça, but they escape with a minimum win. At 53', Barça is awarded a bandball pk, taken by Ferrán Torres at 55'; he shoots wide, and from then on, it's Katy bar the door. At 59', Araújo sees a red card for a "last man" foul, and the rest o the game was just a question of how long Barça could hang on--and they took the three points!

1830 Rayo 0, Athletic 0 Rayo is 0-2-1 in their last three games, but they're still in sixth place. Athletic is two points and three places back of Rayo. Scoreless first half in Vallecas. 12,979 on hand on a rainy evening in Vallecas. At 82', Aguirrezabala, Athletic's goalie, saves the furniture. At 92', Nico Williams hits the crossbar. At 93', Sancet of Athletic sees a red card. But Rayo can't take advantage, and the game ends scoreless.

2100 Betis 0, Real Madrid 0 Betis is two points and one place below the last CL spot. El Real is second, seven points shy of Barça and 12 points ahead of Betis. "Ambientazo" in the Benito Villamarín. At 12', Benzema apparently xcores with a fk, but VAR taketh away, as the ball hit a Real Madrid player's hand on its way to the net--0-0. And still 0-0 at the half. 52,212 reported on hand. At 53', Courtois makes another of his saves that save the furniture. And the game ends scoreless.

Mon. 6 March 2100 Osasuna 0, Celta 0 Osasuna is one point and one place back of the last European spot. Celta is four points and five places above the drop. Scoreless first half in El Sadar, where 17,684 are reported on hand. Game ends scoreless, thanks to my pick for Player of the Game, Celta's goalie iván Villar, who stopped Kike García's would be game-winning header at 89'. Osasuna is in eighth place with this result; Celta is 12th.

Jornada 25 of LaLiga begins

Fri. 10 March 2100 Cádiz 2, Getafe 2 #15 hosts #16. Cádiz is one point and three places above the drop--and they're one point ahead of Getafe. Getafe and Cádiz played to a scoreless tie in their first meeting this season. At 34', Ledesma saves twice for Cádiz--still scoreless. At 39', Rubén Sobrino heads in to give Cádiz the lead, somewhat against the run of play--1-0. Assist by Carcelén. And 1-0 at the half. If Cádiz can win this game, they''ll climb to 12th place. 18,414 reported on hand in the Nuevo Mirandilla. At 59', penalty awarded to Getafe as Enes Unal is fouled. At 61', Enes Unal converts the pk--1-1. But at 80', penalty awarded to Cádiz for a handball in the area, and Domingos Duarte is dismissed for a second yellow. At 82', Rubén Alcaraz converts the pk with a kick right down the middle--2-1. But at 103', handball pk awarded as Espino of Cádiz is guilty of the handball. At 105', Enes Unal converts--2-2 the final. The two teams stay in places 15 and 16, each one point richer :!:

Sat. 11 March

1400 Real Madrid 3, Espanyol 1 Second-place Real has a CL game coming up next week, which is probably why they're in the early game on Sat. They trail Barça by nine points in LaLiga. Espanyol is 13th; they're just two points above the drop. At 8', Kamavinga fails to cut off a pass, ball to Joselu in the area, no mistake as Joselu puts the ball in the net--0-1, and . . .   But at 22', Vini Jr. cuts into the area and lets go a shot that just does go inside the far post--1-1. And at 39', Militao heads in at the far post--2-1 for Real. Halftime in the Bernabéu. 59,782 reported on hand. At 93', Marco Asensio makes it 3-1, and that's the final.

1615 Elche 1, Valladolid 1 Elche is dead last, 13 points back of the lowest team not in the drop, but they are coming in off their first away win of the season and only their second win all season. Valladolid is 14th, two points above the top of the drop. At 4', Larín gives the visitors the lead--0-1. And that's the score at halftime. At 96', Elche finds the tying goal, by Tete Morente--1-1. And that's .the final

1830 Celta 3, Rayo 0 Celta is now in 12th place, three points above the drop. Rayo is seventh; they come in after three ties and a loss in their last four games. Scoreless first half in Balaídos. 14,451 reported on hand. At 51', Iago Aspas breaks the ice--1-0. And a minute later, Pathé Ciss puts one into his own net--2-0 for Celta. At 85', Aspas scores his second of the game with a great vaselina--3-0. And 3-0 is the final; Aspas is player of the game.

2100 Valencia 1, Osasuna 0 Valencia's awful season continues--they're next to last, but only two points back of the lowest team not in the drop. Can they beat an Osasuna team that has looked solid all season and is currently one point and one place back of the last European spot :?: At 21', Osasuna's goalie, Sergio Herrera, sees a red card--which is retracted following consultation with VAR. Scoreless first half in Mestalla. At 74', Kluivert scores from inside the area to give Valencia the lead and lift them above the drop--1-0. At about 86', another red card is rescinded after VAR consultation--Aimar Oroz of Osasuna is "pardoned." And Osasuna is also pardoned when Valencia is awarded a pk at about 90' . . . but Thierry Correia fails to convert for Valencia. Valencia wins it 1-0, and climbs, for the moment, above the drop. Osasuna remains in eighth place for the moment, but will drop a bit should either Mallorca or Athletic win tomorrow.

Sun. 12 March

1400 Mallorca 1, Real Sociedad 1 Both come in off poor results at home--Mallorca lost to Elche and la Real tied with Cádiz. Mallorca is 10th, six points above the drop and four points shy of a European spot. La Real is in fourth place, the last CL spot; they're three points ahead of Betis. At 3', Carlos Fernández gives la Real the lead--0-1. Halftime in Son Moix. 13,840 reported in Son Moix. At 50', Kang-In Lee ties it for Mallorca--1-1. And that's the result at the end.

1615 Sevilla 2, Almería 1 A sort of "Andalusian derby," with Sevilla 17th, ahead of top-of-the-drop Almeía only on GD. Almería beat Sevilla 2-1 in their first meeting, way back in August. At 2', Akieme gives Almería the lead--0-1. At 45'+1', penalty awarded to Sevilla; Ocampos converts at 45'+2--1-1 and halftime. If this game ends in a tie, both teams will be in the drop. At 50', Dimitrovic, in goal for injured Bono, saves the furniture as he blocks Luis Suarez's shot one-on-one. At 73', Bryan Gil centers for Lamela to head in--2-1. And at 76', Dimitrovic saves from Luis Suárez to keep Sevilla in the lead and above the drop :?: In fact, that goal lifts Sevilla all the way to 13th place. Can they hold on :?: :?: Yes, they can and did :!: Almería is now 19th in LaLiga; Sevilla . . . 13th.

1830 Villarreal 1, Betis 1 Big game for European spots--#6 hosts #5. Villarreal trails Betis by four points. Betis won 1-0 when these two met in September. At 38', Pepe Reina, Villarreal's goalie, fails to hold a cross (well, a "centro-chut") and Borja Iglesias, el Panda, pounces and scores--0-1. Halftime in the Estadio de la Cerámica. At 55', Yéremi Pino puts in a cross, and then waits about three minutes to find out from VAR whether the goal counts . . . it does, and it's 1-1. And that's the final score.

2100 Athletic 0, Barça 1 Athletic is 0-1-2 in their last three games and has slipped to ninth place, two points shy of the last European spot. Barça leads the league by nine points over Real Madrid, but injuries have made a rough for them of late. Barça didn't look too sharp in the first half, but they managed to score at 45'+1' after VAR review of a goal by Raphinha, which was called offside by the linesman. We're at the half in San Mamés Barri. 49,741 reported on hand--a record for San Mamés Barri. At 87', the controversy comes--Iñaki Williams puts the ball in the net, and it looks like 1-1, BUT ref Gil Manzano checks out VAR for a handball in the buildup; handball is pretty clear, and the goal is disallowed. So Barça holds on and regains a nine-point lead over Real Madrid going into next Sunday's Clásico in the Camp Nou.

Mon. 13 March 2100 Girona 0, Atlético 1 Girona is in mid-table, five points shy of Europe and five points above the drop, in their last three games they've scored 11 goals and conceded 8 :!: Atleti is now in third place, 17 points ( :!: ) off the league lead; they're now four points above the highest team which is not in a CL spot. Scoreless first half in Montilivi. At 94', the ball put into the net by Alvaro Morata is ruled to be a valid goal by VAR--0-1. The ball actually went into the net at about 91'. VAR giveth, VAR taketh away :!:
