Stage set for #U17WAC showdown at Indonesia 2024

https://www.the-afc.com/en/national/afc ... _2024.html

Kuala Lumpur: Almost five years after it was last held, the AFC U17 Women’s Asian Cup™ will make its highly anticipated return next Monday as eight contenders begin their quest for glory at the ninth edition.

Scheduled to run from May 6 to 19, the AFC U17 Women’s Asian Cup™ Indonesia 2024 will take place in idyllic Bali as the Southeast Asian country stages the tournament for the first time.

Automatically qualified as hosts, Indonesia are joined by the three highest-seeded sides from the AFC U-16 Women’s Championship Thailand 2019 – defending champions Japan, DPR Korea and China PR – and four more sides that navigated two qualifying rounds: Australia, Korea Republic, Thailand and the Philippines.

The top three finishers will qualify for the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup 2024, which kicks off on October 16 in the Dominican Republic.

China PR, Japan, Korea Republic and Thailand are the only four teams to qualify for all nine iterations of the AFC U17 Women’s Asian Cup™ to date, while all three former winners – DPR Korea, Japan and Korea Republic – are eyeing a repeat triumph. Meanwhile, the Philippines will make their debut.

With a joint-record two World Cup crowns (2008, 2016) to their name, DPR Korea are amongst the world’s best in this age category. The only team to reach the Final in each of their participations, an eighth consecutive appearance is on the cards and the three-time champions (2007, 2015, 2017) have the opportunity to hold both the U17 and U20 titles at the same time for a second occasion after 2007, having won the latter competition in March in Uzbekistan.

Korea Republic’s sole triumph came in 2009 when they saw off DPR Korea – their only win in six previous tournament meetings, of which they have lost four. The Taegeuk Girls, who went on to seal the 2010 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup title, qualified for this edition in style by scoring the most goals and conceding the fewest enroute to winning all five matches.

A Southeast Asian showdown is on the cards at 7pm in the second Group A match as Indonesia face the Philippines at the Kapten I Wayan Dipta Stadium. The home side will be out to impress on their return 19 years after their debut in the inaugural edition in 2005, as they look to claim their first ever point. Meanwhile, the Philippines produced a stellar qualifying campaign to earn a historic berth and they will become the 21st different team to play at the Finals when they run out on to the pitch.

The action continues the following day on May 7 when the two Group B matches get underway, with the first at 4pm between China PR and Australia at the Bali United Training Center.

China PR have reached the last four in seven of their previous eight participations, with their best result coming in 2005 as runners-up. They finished third in 2019 for the fourth time in history by defeating Australia and will aim to make it four wins in six encounters in Bali. Meanwhile, the Junior Matildas are making their seventh appearance at the Finals and the two-time fourth-place finishers (2009, 2019) were the other team – along with Korea Republic – to sail through qualification with a perfect record of five wins.

The only side that has never finished outside the top three at every edition, Japan kick off their title defence at 7pm when they welcome Thailand’s challenge at the Kapten I Wayan Dipta Stadium. World champions in 2014, the Little Nadeshiko have lifted this trophy on a record four occasions and defeated the Thais in all five previous tournament meetings. A fourth Knockout Stage appearance will be the aim for the latter, who finished third once (2005) and fourth twice (2013, 2015).

Having qualified for every FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup to date, Japan are targeting an eighth consecutive involvement while China PR (2010, 2022), DPR Korea (2008, 2010, 2012, 2014, 2016, 2018) and Korea Republic (2008, 2010, 2018) are hoping to seal a return to the global showcase.

All timings indicated are in local time.

FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup Dominican Republic 2024™ emblem unveiled

https://inside.fifa.com/about-fifa/orga ... m-unveiled

Inspired by ‘Batún’, a game played by Taíno people on a central court or plaza using a rubber ball, and the ‘Bachata’ and ‘Merengue’ dances traditional to the country

Design seeks to unite football with local traditions

2024 marks the first time that the Dominican Republic will host a FIFA tournament

FIFA has unveiled the official emblem for the upcoming FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup Dominican Republic 2024™, which is a bold and playful design that tells a story of joy, community and competition.

With the emblem, FIFA celebrates football and the identity of the Dominican Republic, its history and its important role as the host of the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup 2024™. The powerful movements and the colours are inspired by ‘Batún’– a game played by Taíno people on a central court or plaza using a rubber ball – and the ‘Bachata’ and ‘Merengue’ dances traditional to the country.

Aiming to unite football with dance and local customs to celebrate the world’s best U-17 footballers arriving in the Dominican Republic this year, the emblem is also illustrative of the flourishing female talent that will commence their international football stories in the Caribbean.

"FIFA is proud and happy to bring its first-ever tournament to the Dominican Republic. We are confident that the passion and joy of the country will be contagious throughout a tournament that will inspire future stars of football,” said FIFA Director of Tournaments Jaime Yarza.

Examples such as Linda Caicedo, equal top scorer at India 2022, Cata Coll, best goalkeeper at Uruguay 2018 and current FIFA Women's World Cup 2023™ winner with Spain, and FIFA Legend Mana Iwabuchi, best player at New Zealand 2008, are stars in which the players at this year’s tournament can look up to.

The capital of Dominican Republic, Santo Domingo, and the city of the heart, Santiago de los Caballeros, will be the centerpieces of the tournament that will be played between 16 October and 3 November. 16 teams will compete for the crown currently held by Spain after they won the last tournament in India two years ago.

“Women’s football in the Dominican Republic has emerged as a phenomenon of global importance, challenging stereotypes and promoting gender equality in sports, thus encouraging the empowerment of women both on and off the field. We are honoured to take on the organisation of the event that will mark a before and after in the history of sports events in the Dominican Republic,” said FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup Local Organising Committee Chief Executive Officer, Elizabeth Mena.

Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico, New Zealand, and United States have already qualified for the tournament and will join hosts Dominican Republic in the group stage. Six teams will be finalised in May, when three representatives from Asia and three from Europe are confirmed, while three teams will secure their ticket in June, when qualifying in Africa concludes.

Fans can register to receive ticket information for the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup Dominican Republic 2024.

This year’s FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup will be the last to feature 16 teams before the tournament increases to 24 teams for the next edition to be staged in Morocco in 2025.

Nigeria, Senegal take control as Morocco cruise in U17 Women's World Cup qualifiers

https://www.cafonline.com/womens-footba ... lifiers-2/

The race to reach the 2024 FIFA U17 Women's World Cup in the Dominican Republic intensified across Africa this weekend, with Nigeria, Senegal, and Morocco taking significant strides towards qualification.

In Bamako, Nigeria's Flamingos seized the initiative against Burkina Faso with a crucial 1-1 away draw against a tough Burkina Faso side on Saturday in the first leg of the third and penultimate round of the African qualifiers for the 2024 World Cup.

Chidi Harmony's 55th-minute strike handed them a 1-0 advantage heading into the return leg in Abuja on May 18th.

However, Rainata Oubda's late equaliser for the Etalons ensured the tie remained delicately poised at 1-1.

Senegal's Lionesses also grabbed a two-goal cushion in their bid to reach the final round, overcoming Liberia 3-1 in Thiès.

Marie Sarr's quickfire double put the hosts in control before Mariama Faty extended their lead after the interval.

Brown's late penalty for Liberia provided a glimmer of hope ahead of the return fixture in Monrovia on May 19th, but Senegal will fancy their chances of progressing.

Meanwhile, in Berkane, Morocco's Lionesses took a giant stride towards the next phase, thrashing Algeria 4-0 in a one-sided affair on Friday night.
Ines Aboucharif, Romaissa Ihssan, and Ouafae Bentahri were on target for the rampant Moroccans, who also benefitted from an Algerian own goal by Hannane Sehoul.

The comprehensive victory leaves Morocco firmly in the driving seat ahead of the second leg in Algiers on May 17th, as the North Africans seek to maintain their impressive record in the qualifiers.

With the return legs just around the corner, the three ties remain finely poised, setting the stage for more drama and intrigue as the continent's brightest young female talents.

The countries to represent Africa for the Under-17 Women's World Cup will be known at the end of the fourth and final round of qualifiers next month.

The 2024 U17 Women's World Cup is scheduled to be played in in the Dominican Republic fromOctober 16 to November 3 later this year.
