Is 10-6 a fair distribution?
I would suggest that the 2 weakest teams from CONMEBOL should at least play some kind of playoff against the 7th and 8th team from CONCACAF

Its Copa America, so all 10 south American teams must be present. The others are just guest.Witkop1983 wrote: ↑Thu Dec 22, 2022 18:15 Is 10-6 a fair distribution?

Plus even Bolivia would be a regular Hexagonal participant in CONCACAF, everybody knows that.rpo.castro wrote: ↑Thu Dec 22, 2022 18:21Its Copa America, so all 10 south American teams must be present. The others are just guest.Witkop1983 wrote: ↑Thu Dec 22, 2022 18:15 Is 10-6 a fair distribution?

Copa America with 16 teams (6 CONCACAF countries) is really an attractive tournament almost as interesting as EURO.
Copa America with just 12 teams became interesting only from the knock-out phase.
Gold Cup is a ridicolous tournament, though the rise of Canada might bring more interest to it.
All things considered, imo the 16 teams tournament involving all the continent from Terranova to the Tierra del Fuego should become the norm.

International break hater
And then you have the tournament last year with only 10 teams (so invited guests), where they played 20 group stage matches in total just to eliminate the two weakest teams (Bolivia and Venezuela).matt wrote: ↑Thu Dec 22, 2022 19:49 Copa America with 16 teams (6 CONCACAF countries) is really an attractive tournament almost as interesting as EURO.

And as much as people ridicule the Gold Cup, it is a money maker for CONCACAF, and also the only available international tournament for the small Central American and Caribbean countries (unless they make a 24-team Copa America).
I feel like there is a Copa America every year or so. That will be 5 editions within 9 years : 2015-2016-2019-2021-2024.
It was worse in its early history, hah. And, as the oldest continental tournament, that's the reason both Argentina and Uruguay have the mammoth number of 15 trophies.
There were two "Campeonato Sudamericano" in 1959, one played in March-April in Argentina, contested by seven teams and won by Argentina, the other played in December in Ecuador, contested by five teams and won by Uruguay.

Definitely agree with you but it will not happen (I mean the merger CONMEBOL/CONCACAF).matt wrote: ↑Thu Dec 22, 2022 19:49 Copa America with 16 teams (6 CONCACAF countries) is really an attractive tournament almost as interesting as EURO.

The Concacaf is a way to ensure that the US (and Mexico) are always qualified for the World Cup (or almost, cf. 2018) and it is important for both the US and FIFA.

Wouldn't have to merge into a single confederation. The best way imo would be to convert one Gold Cup into the Copa Centroamericana. Both confederations still have their continental championship, and this one. There's less need for two Gold Cups now with the Nations League. Alternatively, the Nations League could be where you have the merger instead.Lyonnais wrote: ↑Fri Dec 30, 2022 13:53Definitely agree with you but it will not happen (I mean the merger CONMEBOL/CONCACAF).matt wrote: ↑Thu Dec 22, 2022 19:49 Copa America with 16 teams (6 CONCACAF countries) is really an attractive tournament almost as interesting as EURO.

UEFA and CONMEBOL have an MOI so i've a funny feeling that the 3 play-off Final losers for Euro 24 will be sent to Copa America with 10 CONMEBOL teams and top 3 teams in Gold Cup 2023.
If the 2024 tournament is hosted in the USA, then they will need the approval of CONCACAF, so it is likely all six guest teams will come from CONCACAF.Jackson Harrison wrote: ↑Sat Dec 31, 2022 17:32 UEFA and CONMEBOL have an MOI so i've a funny feeling that the 3 play-off Final losers for Euro 24 will be sent to Copa America with 10 CONMEBOL teams and top 3 teams in Gold Cup 2023.
In the future, if CONMEBOL decides to continue to invite guest teams (perhaps they can organize a 20 or 24 team tournament), I can see UEFA teams joining as guest teams, especially if it is used as a rehearsal for an upcoming World Cup (2030 or 2034).
Presumably they would be UEFA teams which did not qualify for the EC.
CONMEBOL and Concacaf sign strategic collaboration agreement

The CONMEBOL Copa America 2024 will be played in the United States, in the summer of 2024, and will include 10 CONMEBOL teams and the six best Concacaf teams, as guests. This traditional CONMEBOL tournament will be co-organized by both confederations.
The six Concacaf national teams will have the opportunity to qualify for this competition through the 2023/24 Concacaf Nations League.
For women's national teams, Concacaf has invited the top four CONMEBOL national teams to participate in the 2024 Concacaf W Gold Cup. The inaugural edition of this 12-team tournament, which is a key part of Concacaf’s new women's national team ecosystem, will be played in the United States.
The four guest CONMEBOL teams that will participate have been determined based on the results of the 2022 Women’s Copa America: Brazil (champion) Colombia (runner-up), Argentina (third place) and Paraguay (fourth place).
CONMEBOL and Concacaf will also organize a centralized "final four" style club competition featuring the best clubs from the respective confederations. The four participating teams (two from each confederation) will qualify through existing CONMEBOL and Concacaf club competitions and the two confederations are working towards the first edition of this tournament being played in 2024.
