Promotions and Relegations 2023

Post by seso »

We can discuss here the promotion and relegation battles to/from the 1st and 2nd divisions of each country.
Any interesting names going down or up?

In Wales (Cymru Premier), Airbus UK has -2 points after 22 matches (Phase 1). In Phase 2, they will probably be relegated after the first two MDs.
They had played six EL matches during 2013-16 (0-4-2 W-D-L).

In Netherlands FC Groningen is on last place right now, allthough it is still very close. If they would be relegated it would be after 23 years at the top level.

For promotion is is less interesting. PEC Zwolle and Heracles Almelo (who both got relegated last season) are in the top 2 and looks to be back after just 1 season.

Sevilla and Valencia are in a relegation fight in Spain.

I don't think Sevilla will be in danger, but Valencia might be.

In Serbia Radnički NIš is in danger, but I expect them to be saved one way or another.
In Bosnia Sloboda is in problems, also financially and it will be a very very tough season for them. It would ba a huge blow for the league if they go out, but that currently seems very realistic.
In Russia Torpedo and Lokomotiv, my two favourite clubs, are in the relegation places at the moment, but at least the latter could still be saved.

3 well known, solid teams are fighting for survival in England. Leicester, West Ham and Everton. The 1st two will probably stay up, but Everton have the fight of their lives to escape. Bielsa - the 1st choice to replace Lampard - refused the job, that tells a lot about the challenge Dyche faces.

Wales: Barry Town United 5-0 Pontardawe Town, so Barry Town United has been promoted to Cymru Premier with three MDs to go.
The club has played several European matches during 1994-2021. It has the fourth-highest number of European participations in Wales after TNS, Bangor City and Cardiff City. Its biggest moment has been beating FC Porto 3-1 in Barry in 2001-02 UCL-Q2!

Wales:

Haverfordwest County has been relegated for failing to obtain a Tier 1 licence. The 11th placed team will be spared from relegation. Haverfordwest County had played against Icelandic Fimleikafélag Hafnarfjarðar (FH) in 2004-05 UEFA Cup Q1 (eliminated 0-1, 1-3)

Also, Colwyn Bay FC gained promotion to Cymru Premier for the first time in its history.

Sheffield United needs just 3 more wins to be promoted to the Premier League two seasons after they were relegated.

Sheffield Wednesday is also close to being promoted to the Championship.

In England, the relegation of Scunthorpe United from the 5th tier National League to the 6th tier have been confirmed. As recently as 2010-11, they were playing in the 2nd tier Championship.

There are of course two clubs currently playing in the 5th tier National League that have previously played in the top tier: Notts County, who are founding members of the Football League in 1888, and Oldham Athletic, who played in the Premier League for two seasons. Another club, Luton Town, who are currently in the Championship and most likely will be in the promotion play-offs, have played in both the 1st tier and 5th tier, so may complete the journey from 1st tier to 5th tier and back to 1st tier.

Loughgall: Meet Europe's smallest settlement with a top-flight team

There are just 282 residents of the County Armagh village Loughgall, but the success of their football teams means that this sleepy village is about to get a whole lot busier next season.

Loughgall sealed their return to the Irish Premiership as Championship winners with a 3-1 win against Dundela on Saturday.

They will now play top-flight football for the first time since 2007 and as a result the village will become the smallest settlement in Europe to have a team in the top tier of football.

For the direct promotion and relegation spots in the Netherlands it is not very exciting this season. With 5 matchdays left these are the standings:

16.FC Emmen 25
----------------------
17.FC Groningen 17
18.SC Cambuur 16

FC Groningen play in the top division for 23 seasons, SC Cambuur only 2 seasons

1.PEC Zwolle 75
2.Heracles Almelo 70
--------------------
3.Almere City FC 62

Both PEC Zwolle and Heracles Almelo will be back after just 1 season

Yeovil Town will be another club which went from the 2nd tier to the 6th tier. They were playing in the Championship in the 2013-14 season, and have been relegated from the National League after losing to Wrexham last night.

England-Wales:
With 3 MDs remaining in the Championship, it is very tight in the top half (6 points difference between clubs in positions 5-13 and just 3 points difference between clubs in positions 5-11). Clubs above position 13 (Swansea City) can still qualify to the promotion play-offs.
Sheffield United, Luton Town and Middlesbrough have already qualified (at least) for the promotion play-offs.

English-Nigerian FW Chuba Akpom (Middlesbrough) is the top scorer so far with 28 goals. He has previously played for Arsenal, Brentford, Coventry City, Nottingham Forest, Hull City, Brighton & Hove Albion, Sint-Truiden and PAOK. He used to score 6-9 goals per season. Huge 'improvement' this season!
