PAOK is not a club. PAOK is a cultural phenomenon.

I planned to open the thread with a brief introduction of what the big 5 are doing but...they're not doing that much so far.

Olympiacos announced Diego Martinez as their new coach, while Aris decided to continue with interim coach Tolis Terzis becoming their permanent coach. AEK, Panathinaikos and PAOK continue with Almeyda, Jovanovic and Lucescu.

European draw results:

CL NCQ2

Dnipro vs Panathinaikos

EL NCQ3

Olympiacos vs loser of Servette/Genk

ECLQ2

PAOK vs Beitar Jerusalem
Egnatia/Ararat-Armenia vs Aris

Nordin Amrabat of AEK managed to get a red card in the 16th minute of a friendly match after the Greek referees were to afraid to show him one numerous times during last season

Let's see if he ruins some European matches this season for AEK due to that....

The season in Greece starts in 10 days with Q2 of the Champions League and the Conference League, so a brief recap of the changes in the rosters of the clubs so far, starting with the 3 playing in Q2:

Panathinaikos

Departures:

Kourbelis (DM) - end of contract, went to Trabzonspor
Puchacz (LB) - end of loan, return to Union Berlin
F.Sanchez (RB) - end of contract, went to AEK Larnaca
Sarlija (CB) - end of contract, went to Hajduk
Pouggouras (CB) - end of contract, free agent

Arrivals:

Vilhena (CM) - bought for 3M from Espanyol
Zeca (CM) - free transfer from Copenhagen, had played for Panathinaikos in the past
Mladenovic (LB) - free transfer from Legia Warsaw
Jevdaj (CB) - on loan from Lokomotiv Moscow
Djuricic (AM) - free transfer from Sampdoria
Jeremejeff (CF) - loan return from Levadiakos

The Greens have theoretically covered the holes the few departures left, added depth in a few positions, and are counting on last year's squad structure to guide them in the European Qualifiers and the new season in Greece. The philosophy of Ivan Jovanovic isn't expected to change: defense first.

Friendly matches:

W 4-0 vs Wiener Viktoria
W 3-1 vs Rogaska
W 2-0 vs Petrolul
W 1-0 vs CSKA 1948
W 3-1 vs AEK Larnaca
D 1-1 vs Hapoel Beer Sheva
L 0-1 vs Rayo Vallecano

PAOK

Departures:

Ingasson (CB) - sold to Midtjylland for 4M
Oliveira (CF) - end of contract, free agent
El Kaddouri (AM) - end of contract, free agent
Biseswar (AM) - end of contract, free agent
Kargas (CB) - end of contract, went to Anorthosis
Kurtic (CM) - end of loan, return to Parma
Dantas (CM) - end of loan, return to Benfica

Arrivals:

Troost-Ekong (CB) - bought for 1M from Watford
Baba (LB) - free transfer from Chelsea, had played for PAOK in the past
Sammatta (CF) - free transfer from Fenerbahce

PAOK lost Ingasson, their best defender in big matches, and whether Troost-Ekong can replace him remains to be seen. The remaining departures were aged players with heavy contracts that PAOK and won't really be missed. PAOK needs transfers if they plan to be more competitive than last year, and so far there is not much activity.

The lates news are that sporting director Jose Boto is fired from PAOK, his stint being considered a failure.

Friendly matches:

D 1-1 vs Steaua
L 1-2 vs Go Ahead Eagles
W 3-2 vs Genk
W 4-1 vs Al Taawoun
L 2-3 vs Westerlo

Aris

Departures:

Matteo Garcia (RW) - sold to Atlas for 1M
Mazikou (LB) - sold to Servette for 350k
Chrysopoulos (CB) - sold to AEK for 800k, from the youth team
Iturbe (LW) - end of contract, went to Gremio
Siabanis (GK) - end of contract, went to Volos
Peersman (LB) - end of contract, went to Groningen
Ab.Kamara (CF) - end of loan, returned to Olympiacos
Camacho (RW) - end of loan, returned to Sporting
Etebo (CM) - end of loan, returned to Stoke
Nkoulou (CB) - end of contract, free agent

Arrivals:

Menendez (LW) - free transfer, from Salt Lake City
Djurasek (DM) - free transfer, from Shakhtar
Mattarita (LB) - free transfer, from Dnipro
Ferrari (LB) - free transfer, from APOEL
Pavicic (CM) - free transfer, from Konyaspor
Choutesiotis (GK) - free transfer, from Ionikos
Fattore (RB) - free transfer, from Sevilla B
Aidonis (CB) - free transfer, from Stuttgart
Saverio (LW) - free transfer, from La Coruna
Jules (DM) - free transfer, from Gornik Zabrze
Zamora (LW) - free transfer, from Dep.Saprissa
Karlsson (CF) - on loan from Urawa Red Diamonds
Loren Moron (CF) - free transfer, from Las Palmas

New season, new squad for Aris, what's new? Aris is used to building and discarding entire squads in the summer, with complete lack of long-term planning, constant coach changes and essentially rolling the dice and hoping for a winning hand.

Nobody has any idea if they are stronger or weaker than last year (which was a terrible one for Aris), but the friendly results so far are bad and their coach is not a coach, it's interim coach Terzis made permanent.

Weaker or not, they are expected to beat Ararat-Armenia but Greece has shown lately the pit is bottomless and even more embarassing results are possible for Greek clubs in Europe.

There is also a rumour that Aris owner changed alliances, from Olympiacos to AEK, with the transfer of youth prospect Chrysopoulos for almost 1M being AEK's welcoming gift.

Friendly matches:

W 1-0 vs Maccabi Haifa
L 1-4 vs Maccabi Haifa
L 0-1 vs Botev Plovdiv
L 0-2 vs CSKA 1948
W 3-1 vs Ethnikos Achna

Continuing with the two teams entering in August: champions AEK and the continuous trainwrech that is Olympiacos:

AEK

Departures:

Tzavellas (CB) - end of contract, went to Pendikspor
Fransson (CM) - end of contract, free agent

Arrivals:

Pizarro (AM) - free transfer from Inter Miami
Pilios (LB) - free transfer from PAS Giannina
Chrysopoulos (CB) - bought for 800k from Aris
Zini (CF) - bought for 350k from Primeiro do Agosto

AEK also kept Pineda (previously on loan) by paying 6.5M to Celta, and sold Michelin (1M) and Svarnas (800k) to Bordeaux and Rakow where they were already playing on loan.

AEK is essentially the same team with last year, and seem the most ready so far for the new season. They seem to be breaking their usual tradition of selling their good players whenever a good offer comes, having rejected high offers for Levi Garcia so far (although they are definitely not..20M as some Greek reporters claim).

They start the season from the pole position, given that they have the same team that won the league last year, they still control the federation and Olympiacos - the only team with a financial advantage over them - is still a shitsow.

Friendly matches:

L 0-1 vs Lokomotiva Zagreb
W 3-0 vs Antwerp
W 5-0 vs Shakhtar Donetsk
W 3-0 vs Volos

Olympiacos

Departures:

Bakambu (CF) - end of contract, went to Al Nassr Dubai
Canos (RW) - end of loan, returned to Brentford
Samassekou (DM) - end of loan, returned to Hoffenheim
Mvila (DM) - end of contract, free agent
Papastathopoulos (CB) - end of contract, free agent
Kasami (CM) - end of contract, free agent
Valbuena (AM) - end of contract, went to Apollon Limassol
Kristinsson (GK) - end of contract, went to Kifisia

Arrivals:

Iborra (DM) - free transfer from Levante
Quini (RB) - free transfer from Granada
Freire (CB) - on loan from Pumas UNAM

Where to begin? Olympiacos is coming from a historically bad and embarassing season, during which in Europe they got spanked by clubs like Nantes, Maccabi Haifa and Qarabag and could not beat Slovan and Apollon Limassol, while in Greece they suffered humiliation after humiliation in big matches, with a cancerous roster filled of aged primadonnas, unfit veterans, talentless athletes with barely any technique and overall mediocre players.

Ending this season, Olympiacos hired Antonio Cordon as DoF and Diego Martinez as manager, to turn a fresh page. Correct on paper. But in action, Olympiacos has done nothing to expell the sources of the disease festering in the team: the players in the pre-season are the same horrible players that were polluting the club's shirt last year, most prominent (and despised among the fanbase) are Moldovan LB Reabciuk, MF Bouchalakis, RB Androutsos, and following are winger Masouras and CBs Retsos and Ba.

Not only are these players still considered part of the roster, but the only transfer to cover a hole so far was underwhelming: 35 years old Iborra came to replace Mvila. Meanwhile Bakambu has not been replaced, Olympiacos is nowhere near decent wingers and CBs, and is trying to get rid of around 15 players who go on loan left and right every year (only Onyekuru and Kane were sold so far).

With the current image and mentality (Cordon is not in a hurry thinking this is Spain and he will be given time probably), Olympiacos will be eliminated by Servette and will have to look for a new manager during the autumn. They still have almost 2 months to change something, but all the signs are showing that they're closer to a repeat of last year than to a return to their level.

Friendly matches:

W 2-1 vs Slovacko
D 1-1 vs Nordsjaelland
D 1-1 vs Sabah

2nd Qualifying Round, 1st leg

UEFA Champions League

Dnipro - Panathinaikos 1-3

UEFA Conference League

Ararat Armenia - Aris 1-1
PAOK - Beitar Jerusalem 0-0

Panathinaikos secures EL Groups and ensures that Greece will have a minimum of 2 clubs in Groups.

The two Thessaloniki clubs expectedly shit the bed and fail to beat inferior opponents. Especially for PAOK who is seeded all the way to the Groups, the result can have a ripple negative effect to the Greek coefficient.
