5 - Kamil Grosicki, Efthýmis Kouloúris (both Pogoń Szczecin), Mikael Ishak, Filip Marchwiński, Kristoffer Velde (all Lech Poznań), Łukasz Sołowiej (Puszcza Niepołomice), Kajetan Szmyt (Warta Poznań), Daisuke Yokota (Górnik Zabrze)

This weekend brought a lot of goals, but also failures of the best teams. From top 7, only Pogoń won, against Jagiellonia. The latter missed their best players and did not have enough quality in the squad to compete successfully in Szczecin four days after exhausting match in Poznań.

Legia lost their 4th league match in a row, so memories from 2021 are back. Two years ago they also 1-3 vs Stal at home, although they took the lead first then. Today, Stal had literally 3 shots on goal, while Legia had 25. Stal was clever to copy tactics of Śląsk and counterattack against very high defensive line of Legia.

Yet again Lech played an awful second half, having to replace important players with youngsters, and were just waiting to concede. Śląsk had a very rough match, conceded two penalties and dropped points in Chorzów. It's hard to tell yet if it is going to be more frequent than in Gliwice, where Ruch used to play before.

Surprisingly, the most entertaining match was played in Kielce, and Puszcza didn't give up despite being three goals down. They also fielded the youngest player in history of Ekstraklasa, Igor Pieprzyca, who was 15 years and 19 days old on the day of the match.

Anyway, new teams in the league are not able to get out from the bottom three places. Despite just 13 matches played, ŁKS seems to be completely done. Puszcza is dangerous from time to time, but they drop points even if they score three goals or lead by two. Ruch tries to fight, has also one game in hand, but many of these players were in II liga just 1.5 years ago.

This week, some Polish Cup round of 32 matches will be played. A summary will follow on Thursday, although this round is going to be completed the following week.

Polish Cup round of 32 - results

Legia II Warszawa - Korona Kielce 2:4 AET
Stal Brzeg - Warta Poznań 0:4
Carina Gubin - Stal Stalowa Wola 1:0
Bruk-Bet Termalica Nieciecza - Piast Gliwice 0:1
Zagłębie Sosnowiec - Górnik Zabrze 1:2 AET
Stal Rzeszów - Puszcza Niepołomice 1:0
Zawisza Bydgoszcz - Lech Poznań 0:4
Cracovia - Zagłębie Lubin 1:0
ŁKS - Raków Częstochowa 0:2 AET
GKS Tychy - Legia Warszawa 0:3

Very comfortable wins of Lech and Legia. Raków struggled against ŁKS as usual, but won after extra time, when the hosts were down to 10.

Puszcza, Zagłębie Lubin and ŁKS were eliminated Ekstraklasa sides, although Zagłębie and ŁKS played another Ekstraklasa teams anyway. Puszcza losing to Stal Rzeszów isn't a big surprise either. These teams are more or less evenly matched, even though Puszcza were promoted last season.

Carina Gubin, a III liga side (4th tier), are through and it's their best achievement ever in the competition.

The remaining 6 matches will be played next week. Round of 16 draw will take place on 10 November.

5 - Filip Marchwiński (Lech Poznań), Łukasz Sołowiej (Puszcza Niepołomice), Kajetan Szmyt (Warta Poznań), Daisuke Yokota (Górnik Zabrze)

This matchday didn't cause any mess in the table. Top 6 all won, bottom 3 all lost.

After four consecutive league defeats, Legia finally won. They barely crossed the half line in the second half of the game, needed a penalty to score, but they had to win it no matter how. One does not exit crisis easily. This time they were the lucky team, although Radomiak should have been down to ten after the penalty (either for second yellow or straight red).

Worst performance of the week was Zagłębie, and Raków used it brilliantly. They also needed to boost their confidence before much more difficult match in Lisbon.

Jagiellonia continue to impress at home. Śląsk doesn't, but what was taken from them against Górnik (1:1 conceded in added time), went back to them vs ŁKS. The latter put up a fight this time, but it ended as usual for them, with 8th straight away loss.

Widzew vs Warta was a typical Football Manager video game match. Warta with basically one attack, mainly time wasting, and Widzew missing a lot of chances. Piast recorded their 10th draw in 14th match. They lost as many matches as Śląsk and Lech (just 2), but also won as many as Puszcza and ŁKS (also 2). At least they have best defensive stats in the league (11 goals conceded).

Today, Ruch sacked their coach Jarosław Skrobacz, although no points were expected vs Lech. His assistant Jan Woś will take over, presumably until the end of the season.

This week, remaining cup matches will be played. On Sunday, two exciting matches in Ekstraklasa awaiting: Pogoń vs Raków and Legia vs Lech.

Polish Cup round of 32 - results

Podbeskidzie Bielsko-Biała - Pogoń Szczecin 0:1
Wisła Kraków - Polonia Warszawa 3:0
Garbarnia Kraków - Stal Mielec 2:4 AET
Polonia Bytom - Arka Gdynia 1:3 AET
Resovia - Jagiellonia Białystok 1:3
Wisła Puławy - Widzew Łódź 1:4

Pogoń had some difficulties as usual in the cup, but a strike of Kamil Grosicki in the last minutes let them avoid extra time.

Stal Mielec needed it, despite red card for Garbarnia while Stal where leading 1-0. Stal made it in the end, which means that a total of 12 Ekstraklasa teams is represented in round of 16. The others are Stal Rzeszów, Wisła Kraków, Arka Gdynia (all I liga) and Carina Gubin (III liga).

The draw will be made on 10 November at 12:00 CET.

Polish Cup round of 16 - result of the draw

Pogoń Szczecin - Górnik Zabrze
Carina Gubin - Piast Gliwice
Wisła Kraków - Stal Rzeszów
Arka Gdynia - Lech Poznań
Korona Kielce - Legia Warszawa
Raków Częstochowa - Cracovia
Jagiellonia Białystok - Warta Poznań
Stal Mielec - Widzew Łódź

There will be at least one I liga side in the quarter-finals, although there were just three of them involved in current round draw.

We have 5 Ekstraklasa ties, and basically each of them looks very intriguing.

One-off matches will be played from 5 to 7 December.

Unfortunately, both Legia and Lech disappointed on Sunday. Both teams seemed to be satisfied with a draw, although I'd say they shouldn't. Legia has now a serious points gap to cover, even taking their postponed match into account. Lech should make use of Raków and Legia playing twice a week, but they didn't run far away from them.

On the other hand, Pogoń and Raków gave a nice show. Especially the hosts were closer to score more, but Vladan Kovačević saved Raków a few times. Kamil Grosicki is in top form again and least now he deserves a call up to the national team. We can argue about his age and other things, but there aren't many Polish wingers of his quality in the league.

Puszcza won away for the first time in Ekstraklasa and made the bottom part more interesting. They used their strength - offensive set pieces - and finally held the lead until the end. ŁKS drew vs Piast, who are able to throw out even a high lead to draw. They played the whole second half down to 10.

Normally it would be an excuse, but not against the last team in the table. Apart from that, Śląsk were even down to 9 against Cracovia, and still were able to win. They do it in any circumstances and now it's not only Erik Expósito in front. They improved in the defense a lot which makes collecting points way easier.

On Saturday, a postponed match Widzew vs Ruch will be played. Ruch, under the new coach, will have to win, as they failed to do it tonight vs Radomiak. Second half was promising, but lacked quality in finishing. They won only one match this season (against ŁKS) and it has to change if they want to pick up the fight.

I liga standings

Arka is the new league leader. In two weeks they face Lechia, who recovered recently without their star Luis Fernández, in a local derby. Odra lost three times in a row, but you see the points differences. Over half of the league can realistically dream of achieving at least play-offs.

Matchday 12 - postponed match

League table

Result

Widzew Łódź - Ruch Chorzów 2:1
Fábio Nunes 47', Jordi Sánchez 87' - Mateusz Bartolewski 16'
Attendance: 17 338

Top scorers:
12 - Erik Expósito (Śląsk Wrocław)
8 - Pedro Henrique (Radomiak Radom), Bartłomiej Wdowik (Jagiellonia Białystok)
6 - Kamil Grosicki, Efthýmis Kouloúris (both Pogoń Szczecin), Mikael Ishak, Kristoffer Velde (both Lech Poznań), Tomáš Pekhart (Legia Warszawa), Afimico Pululu (Jagiellonia Białystok)
5 - Alexander Gorgon (Pogoń Szczecin), Filip Marchwiński (Lech Poznań), Łukasz Sołowiej (Puszcza Niepołomice), Ilya Shkurin (Stal Mielec), Kajetan Szmyt (Warta Poznań), Daisuke Yokota (Górnik Zabrze)

Widzew started with 0-1 as usual, but Ruch self-destructed in the second half. Two fouls by their last men resulted in playing down to 9. They simply were not able to hold the lead and still wait for a win since matchday 2. On the other hand, Widzew finally turned their advantage into a positive result after some unlucky performances.

6 - Kamil Grosicki (Pogoń Szczecin), Mikael Ishak, Kristoffer Velde (both Lech Poznań), Tomáš Pekhart (Legia Warszawa), Afimico Pululu (Jagiellonia Białystok), Daisuke Yokota (Górnik Zabrze)

Śląsk are big winners of this round. They claimed three points with their signature 1-0 and a penalty missed by the opponent, while teams ranked 2-6 failed to win. The one which performed best was actually Pogoń, but their offensive tactics turned against them. Lech, Legia and Raków all disappointed although they played at home against an average opposition. Jagiellonia are excused since Piast draw almost all their matches (12 out of 16).

Puszcza are alive and now more than half of the league has to be nervous. Górnik threw away their lead in a similar manner like against Stal two weeks ago and instead of being more or less safe, they will have to look back. But at the moment it's basically impossible to pick a team that would definitely be the worst from current 8-15 set.

Today we also had a coach fired from Radomiak. It has been clear for a few days, but was announced just 1.5 hours before the match vs Śląsk. Constantin Gâlcă is released, today the reserve team coach was the caretaker manager, and the new coach is supposed to be Maciej Kędziorek, current assistant coach at Lech.

Weather conditions in Central Europe strongly affected football matches. In Ekstraklasa, two of them had to be postponed, and most of the others were hard to watch.

In Kielce, it was even worse than e.g. in Gliwice, but once started, they didn't want to interrupt it. A goalless result seemed to be very likely, but Kristoffer Velde, who surprisingly was a substitute that night, scored a brilliant distant goal to give Lech precious points.

Legia had a thunderous start, with a help of Zagłębie GK's blunder. Zagłębie could have scored 2 or 3 goals as well, but had no finishing quality. But after all, it was the most calm match for Legia for months.

Raków dominated Śląsk in the first half in Wrocław, but Śląsk are able to collect points even though the events on the pitch don't justify it. Keeper of Raków had a nonsense trip outside his penalty area and another long-distance goal was scored today.

But the best match was, unexpectedly, in Cracow. Not much snow, but a lot of mud on the pitch, but Cracovia and Ruch scored a total of 8 goals. Cracovia were down to 10 after 30 minutes, so it's remarkable that they managed to equalize three times. There were some dubious decisions in this match, as a penalty for Cracovia was rather not deserved, while Ruch should have had another one in the stoppage time. Ruch couldn't win again, they draw instead and will be really tough for them to climb up.

This week, Polish Cup round of 16 will be played, pending the pitch and weather conditions.

Polish Cup round of 16 - results

Pogoń Szczecin - Górnik Zabrze 2:1 AET
Jagiellonia Białystok - Warta Poznań 2:0
Stal Mielec - Widzew Łódź 1:2
Raków Częstochowa - Cracovia 1:0 AET
Korona Kielce - Legia Warszawa 2:1 AET
Carina Gubin - Piast Gliwice 2:5
Wisła Kraków - Stal Rzeszów 4:1
Arka Gdynia - Lech Poznań 0:1

One surprise in this round. In the previous one, Korona Kielce eliminated reserve team of Legia. Now they beat also the first team. In both matches they needed Martin Remacle to score in the extra time, this time in 120th minute. Legia were waiting for penalties (three shootouts this year, all won) but got punished.

Other teams struggled a bit, Pogoń and Raków needed extra time, but they were actually never on edge of being eliminated.

In quarter-final line-up there are 7 Ekstraklasa clubs and one from I liga (Wisła Kraków).

The draw will take place tomorrow at 12:00 CET.

Polish Cup quarter-finals - result of the draw

Lech Poznań - Pogoń Szczecin
Piast Gliwice - Raków Częstochowa
Wisła Kraków - Widzew Łódź
Jagiellonia Białystok - Korona Kielce

Lech vs Pogoń will be a real cracker, but overall it is a very strong line-up, so interesting pairings were quite probable to happen.

Korona first met Jagiellonia II, then Legia II, then Legia and now Jagiellonia :D

This round is scheduled for 27-29 February.

Weekend of draws in Ekstraklasa. So Piast, who drew almost all their matches so far, won this time. Lech is more or less at the same level as Raków and Legia, who have one match in hand each and play twice a week. This is disappointing as more was expected from Lech.

Jagiellonia keeps being the most spectacular team of the league and absolutely destroyed Raków. Legia hit the woodwork four times vs ŁKS, but played an unacceptable first half, so they have to blame themselves for that and for the lack of efficiency. ŁKS play a crucial match vs Ruch next week.

Puszcza won their third match in a row (not counting 15 minutes vs Piast; this match will be finished next year). Cracovia are now in the relegation zone and will face Legia twice in the next days (their postponed match will take place on 20 December). But there are much more teams involved in the battle.

Śląsk finish 2023 on first place. Against Zagłębie, they weren't the better side (again), but managed to defend their lead. Jagiellonia weren't able to do it, although they were 3-0 up vs Puszcza! Three teams threw away such advantage this autumn, and Jagiellonia were on both sides. On Saturday, they lost it, and against Lech in October, they recovered.

Lech sacked their coach John van den Brom after their draw vs Radomiak, although the decision had allegedly been made beforehand. They had to defend down to 10 and drew a match that was looking safe for them after 70 minutes. New coach is a surprise. Mariusz Rumak is back in the club after almost 10 years, and he looks like an interim solution until the end of the season. It seems they didn't find anyone in last few weeks.

Raków won very luckily. Just before the winning own goal, they conceded, but it was a matter of centimeters if Korona player used his hand the control the ball or not. Then, Korona was very close to have a penalty in the injury time. Instead, Raków had it, but Piasecki was denied from both the spot and the rebound.

Legia won as well, and after the match sad news was revealed. Cracovia owner and chairman Janusz Filipiak is dead at the age of 71. He has owned the club for 20 years and Cracovia is on the highest level thanks to him, even if in relegation zone now. He had an accident in September and has been hospitalized since then, so they had to be prepared to cope without him, but now it's really over. His family will take over, but more details about the future of the club is unknown.

Both teams will meet again on Wednesday in a match postponed from week 2. No idea why they do it like this. Korona vs Raków, Stal vs ŁKS and Piast vs Puszcza will all take place next year. Legia has enough of this autumn and Cracovia are not in the mood either, as you can imagine. An additional match in early 2024 would be useful to prepare for Molde tie in ECL knock-out play-off round. But at least we will have one more match before Christmas.

At the bottom, ŁKS and Ruch played a I liga match in Ekstraklasa. Last call for both, yet not used. Ruch draw a lot of matches, they are not worse than their opponents, but simply are not able to collect points. ŁKS just don't have the quality.

Yes, very sad news. Janusz Filipiak took out Cracovia from a real oblivion, he simply resurrected this club. He truly loved Cracovia, pumped a lot of his money into it without any chance to get them ever back and presently Cracovia is one of Ekstraklasa regular clubs with a new stadium. We had many examples of rich people in Poland who bought a club for entertainment and used it like a toy or owners who bought a club in order to milk it like a cow financially. Filipiak was with his club for good and for bad times, like when they were relegated to the 2nd tier for one season.

Just take a look at this graph:

Image

Poziom 1 - 1st tier
Poziom 2 - 2nd tier
Poziom 3 - 3rd tier

When he was in power Cracovia participated in the European Cups and won Polish Cup in 2020, their first real trophy since the Championship title in 1948.

Very, very sad news.

8 - Kamil Grosicki, Efthýmis Kouloúris (both Pogoń Szczecin), Pedro Henrique (Radomiak Radom), Ilya Shkurin (Stal Mielec)

Cracovia took revenge on Legia successfully. Rather poor performance from both sides, but Cracovia haven't won since the end of September against ŁKS, when Filipiak had accident. So they needed it no matter what. Not them, but Korona will spend winter break in relegation zone.

A draw would have been enough for Legia to climb on third place, but they end the calendar year on fifth, equal on points with Raków and one less than Lech. In the 2023 table, these three teams collected the most points (66), but played different number of matches: Lech 37, Legia 36 and Raków 35.

That's it for now. Ekstraklasa will be back on 9 February 2024.
