#ACL - Q-finalists confirmed

https://www.the-afc.com/en/club/afc_cha ... irmed.html

Kuala Lumpur: Five former champions are among the eight teams who confirmed their places in the AFC Champions League™ 2023/24 quarter-finals after the conclusion of the Round of 16 on Thursday.

Among teams seeking their first title, China PR’s Shandong Taishan were the first side to check into the last eight after an exciting 4-2 second leg win over Japan’s Kawasaki Frontale on Tuesday.

Jadson’s stoppage time strike proved to be the difference as Shandong emerged 6-5 winners on aggregate to set up a clash with another Japanese side in Yokohama F. Marinos.

Marinos - chasing their first title - were also beneficiaries of a late goal in the second leg as Anderson Lopes put away a decisive penalty just before the end of extra time to beat Bangkok United 1-0.

The other East quarter-final will be an all-Korea Republic affair with Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors FC facing Ulsan Hyundai FC.

Two-time champions Jeonbuk held their nerves to hold another Korea side in Pohang Steelers to a 1-1 draw on Tuesday to book their place 3-1 on aggregate, thanks to Jeong Tae-wook’s header 14 minutes from the end.

Ulsan, also seeking a third AFC Champions League title, had a more straightforward encounter against Japan’s Ventforet Kofu, following up their 3-0 first leg win with a 2-1 victory in Tokyo to advance.

Over in the West, inaugural AFC Champions League winners Al Ain FC had to dig deep to secure a 2-1 second leg win at home against Uzbekistan’s FC Nasaf after a goalless draw in the first leg.

Soufiane Rahimi’s goal in the second minute of stoppage time sealed a meeting with Al Nassr in the next round, the Saudi Arabian side registering a 3-0 aggregate win over Al Fayha.

Having won the first leg 1-0, goals from Otavio and Cristiano Ronaldo did the job on Wednesday as Al Nassr kept their hopes for a first AFC Champions League title alive.

Completing the last eight were Saudi Arabian sides Al Hilal SFC and Al Ittihad, who confirmed their spots on Thursday.

Two-time winners Al Ittihad came from behind to secure a 2-1 win in the second leg against Uzbekistan’s Navbahor with Toma Tamatadze’s miskick from a corner handing an 87th minute winner to the Saudi side.

Al Hilal, seeking to be Asian champions for the fifth time, also had to come from behind to defeat Islamic Republic of Iran's Sepahan FC 3-1, with the Saudi Pro League side advancing 6-2 on aggregate.

The first leg of the quarter-finals will be played between March 4 and 6.

3 Saudi teams in the west semis, awesome! Surely Saudi Arabia hosting the knockouts from next season will only further help this 😐

Next season, a maximum of 3 teams per association can participate in the first-tier AFC Champions League Elite, so there will be at least one non-Saudi team from the West Region in the final eight tournament hosted by Saudi Arabia.

Unless Al Ittihad wins this year for example. It could be top three + Al Ittihad as last season's winners

Actually the rules are different for ACLE compared with competitions of other confederations such as UCL. If Al Ittihad win this season's ACL title but finish outside the top 3 in the Saudi League, there will still be only 3 Saudi teams playing in the ACLE next season, as they will just occupy one of Saudi's three places in ACLE, and thus "kick" the Saudi league 3rd place out of ACLE. The three Saudi teams playing in ACLE next season would be Al ittihad as the ACL title holders, and the league top two (likely to be Al Hilal and Al Nassr).

You can read the Entry Regulations, Article 3.12.1, for the details: https://assets.the-afc.com/downloads/mi ... -2023).pdf

Possible slot allocation for 2025/26 AFC club competitions, based on AFC Club Competitions Ranking 2024 after completion of February 2024 matches

Note: This is the slot allocation according to the default scheme. Slot reallocation may take place due to unused berths, so it is always potentially better to have a higher ranking within your region.

West Region

Image

Association 1 (3+0 in ACLE, 1+0 in ACL2)
Saudi Arabia (3 teams left in ACL) are certain of 1st spot.

Associations 2-3 (2+1 in ACLE, 1+0 in ACL2)
Qatar are now certain of one of the two spots after complete elimination of Iran.
Iran and UAE (1 team left in ACL) are in contention for the other spot.

Association 4 (1+1 in ACLE, 1+0 in ACL2)
The loser of the Iran-UAE battle will finish in 4th spot.

Associations 5-6 (1+0 in ACLE, 1+0 in ACL2)
Uzbekistan and Iraq are certain of the two spots.

Associations 7-10 (1+1 in ACL2)
Jordan and Tajikistan are certain of two of the four spots.
Bahrain, India and Oman (both with 1 team left in AFC Cup) are in contention for the other two spots.

Associations 11-12 (0+1 in ACL2, 1+0 in ACGL)
if Bahrain or India fail to finish within 7-10, they will finish in 11th spot.
Turkmenistan, Oman (if they fail to finish within 7-10), Lebanon and Kyrgyzstan (both with 1 team left in AFC Cup) are also in contention for one of the two spots.
Kuwait drop out of the top 12 so do not have a team entering ACL2 in 2025/26 (after finishing 11th in the previous rankings and having 0+1 entering ACL2 in 2024/25).

All other associations cannot finish above 13th spot (1+0 or 0+1 in ACGL).
