Records

Palma are only the second club to win the title in their first two campaigns after Playas de Castellón, winners in the inaugural seasons of 2001/02 and 2002/03. The sole other club to have successfully defended the trophy are Inter, who won their fourth and fifth titles in 2016/17 and 2017/18, under current Barça coach Jesús Velasco.

Spanish clubs have won 13 of the 23 competition editions.

Barça and Sporting CP became the first clubs to compete in ten editions of the post-2007 finals (though Sporting CP also took part in the one-off eight-team 2002 final tournament).

Lúcio Jr's tally of five goals is a new record for a final-four tournament (although Joan scored 11 in the eight-team final tournament that concluded the inaugural edition in 2001/02).

Benfica took bronze for the third year running. Their total of four bronze medals is the most, one ahead of Barça and Kairat Almaty.

This was the first time the final four were all past winners.

This season, Sporting CP set new marks for overall wins (71 , overtaking Inter FS's 68) and goals 439 (overtaking Inter's 412, with Benfica now on 432).

Kairat Almaty became the first club to enter 20 editions (from 23 altogether) and became the first to pass 100 matches.

Jesús Velasco of Barça became the first coach to reach 80 matches in this competition in the final.

Sporting coach Nuno Dias oversaw his 17th finals game in his eighth final tournament, both outright records.

During the main round, Dias also became the first coach to record 50 competition wins with a single club (Velasco has 63 wins but with multiple teams).

Sporting captain João Matos played his 21st finals game. His overall appearance record is now 82.

Ricardinho's 11 goals for Riga meant he moved ahead of André Vanderlei as the competition's all-time top scorer, and he is the first player to reach 60. He also moved up to second in the all-time appearances list on 73.

Riga finished with 70 goals, the second highest total for a season after Action 21 Charleroi's 76 in 2003/04. Thalles's personal tally of 15 is the fourth highest total for a player in one season.

Lubawa, Prishtina and Riga progressed from the preliminary round to the elite round, the first time three teams have done so in the same season in this format.

FIFA launches FIFA Futsal World Ranking

https://www.fifa.com/fifaplus/en/news/a ... s-launched

In a huge step forward, FIFA has launched the FIFA Futsal World Ranking for the women's and men's game.

Futsal nations around world ranked globally for first time

Brazil top both men’s and women’s charts; Portugal and Spain complete top three

Rankings will be key reference point for world futsal

FIFA has launched the official FIFA Futsal World Ranking, with powerhouses Brazil the first number-one nation on both the men’s and women’s chart as the rapidly-growing sport takes another major step forward.

Although the FIFA/Coca-Cola Men’s World Ranking for football has existed since December 1992, and women’s senior national teams have been officially ranked by FIFA since 2003, that has not previously been the case for futsal. However, the indoor game has enjoyed exponential growth in recent years and this milestone moment represents the natural next step, as well as being the first time that FIFA men’s and women’s rankings have been launched concurrently.

Broadcasts of the FIFA Futsal World Cup™ in Lithuania in 2021 attracted an average of 2.42 million viewers per match, a massive 130 per cent increase on the previous edition in 2016. The FIFA Futsal World Cup Uzbekistan 2024™, which will be the first FIFA tournament staged in Central Asia, is likely to improve even on those impressive numbers, and a historic first FIFA Futsal Women’s World Cup™ will be held in 2025. Against this backdrop, FIFA has rolled out global rankings for its member associations’ women’s and men’s senior futsal national teams in recognition of the dynamic development of and global interest in the sport.

The initial rankings have been based on statistics gathered from over 4,600 FIFA 'A' matches. FIFA defines an international 'A' match as a match between two FIFA members for which both members field their first representative team ('A' team).

The new ranking system will also serve to seed teams for all upcoming editions of the FIFA Futsal World Cup – including during the recently announced draw for the 2024 competition in Uzbekistan. The system will likewise be used for qualification processes and enable comprehensive and consistent data to be gathered to monitor member associations in accordance with the FIFA Regulations Governing International Matches. That will support the prevention of practices that jeopardise the integrity of the sport, such as match manipulation.

In the nine editions of the FIFA Futsal World Cup to date, the inaugural top-ranked men’s side, Brazil, have been crowned champions five times and only failed to finish on the podium once. They are closely followed on the chart by Portugal, who arrive at this year’s FIFA Futsal World Cup as the holders and have won the last two European crowns. Spain, the two-time world (2000 and 2004) and seven-time European champions, are third in the standings.

Brazil’s women’s national team have been just as dominant as their male counterparts, having won all seven of the South American championships that they have contested. Spain and Portugal are again behind them on the women’s ranking, albeit in reverse order: three-time European champions Spain are second, with Portugal – who have finished runners-up to their Iberian rivals in two continental finals – in third.

Brazil boss maiden FIFA Futsal Men’s World Ranking

https://www.fifa.com/fifaplus/en/tourna ... g-launched

Brazil, Portugal and Spain are first, second and third respectively on the first FIFA Men’s Futsal World Ranking.

The first FIFA Futsal Men’s World Ranking has been published

Brazil and Portugal are first and second respectively

Morocco, Thailand and France are flying high

Brazil sit at the summit of the first FIFA Futsal Men’s World Ranking. Portugal pipped Spain to second spot, while IR Iran and Argentina complete the top five.

It means those five nations, along with hosts Uzbekistan, will be the Pot 1 seeds in the upcoming draw for this year’s FIFA Futsal World Cup™. Pot 2 will comprise Morocco, Kazakhstan, Thailand, France, Ukraine and Paraguay.

New Zealand (19th) and Costa Rica (31st) are the highest-positioned nations from the OFC and Concacaf regions respectively.

Brazil have been on fire since bagging bronze at the last global finals in 2021. They registered back-to-back victories away to Spain last year, and recaptured the Futsal Copa America crown from Argentina in February. Pito is widely regarded as the best player in the world, while Ferrao – the sport’s three-time Best Player – has just returned from ACL surgery.

Portugal won Lithuania 2021, the last two UEFA Futsal EUROs and the first Futsal Finalissima. Jorge Braz’s squad boasts the likes of Andre Coelho, Tomas Paco, Erick Mendonca, Pany Varela and the outrageously gifted Zicky Te.

Spain, the two-time global kings, lost close games to Portugal at the last world and European finals, but have registered positive friendly results in recent years, including a 6-0 win over their Iberian rivals. Coach Fede Vidal calls on the considerable talent of Chino, Adolfo Fernandez and Miguel Mellado.

Iran finished third at Colombia 2016, famously eliminating Brazil en route, and are fresh from an AFC Futsal Asian Cup triumph. In Asghar Hassanzadeh, Moslem Oladghobad and Hossein Tayyebi, Vahid Shamsaei has three of best players in the world in their respective positions.

Argentina, who finished first and second respectively at the last two Futsal World Cups, complete the top five. Nico Sarmiento, Lucas Tripodi, Kiki Vaporaki are elite performers, while Angel Claudino has blossomed into one of the sport’s foremost creators.

Morocco’s ascent has been nothing short of meteoric. They destroyed Kuwait 7-1 in the Arab Futsal Cup final, handed Argentina a 7-0 beatdown in a friendly, escaped the entire 2023 unbeaten, and conquered the Futsal AFCON 2024 in scintillating style. Bilal Bakkali, Soufian Charraoui, Soufiane El-Mesrar and Co are now threatening to make Morocco the first nation outside Europe or South America to lift the sport's most prestigious trophy.

France have also come on leaps and bounds in recent years. The brilliance of Abdessamad Mohammed and Souheil Mouhoudine got them to the global finals for the first time, while they upset Brazil in a friendly last month.

The next FIFA Futsal Men’s World Ranking will be published in October 2024.
