It is usually performed by a computer program and is subject to various rules governing the formation of the fixture calendar, for example each club usually plays two home and two games games in its last four fixtures.

So it's not an actual draw out of a bowl?
No; nowadays there are too many rules to enforce for that!

If I remember well, the first time of serie A computer-based draw was in 1973.Jackson Harrison wrote: ↑Wed Jul 05, 2023 22:24Not in England I don't think!Tazmania wrote: ↑Wed Jul 05, 2023 20:18 Probably many years ago, like in all countries.

I assume that before Alan Turing and computers, England had a manual "draw" or fixtures too.

I read somewhere that the secretary of the Italian Football Association, filled manually the fixtures, taking into account some constraints: i.e. two clubs sharing the same stadium means one playing home and the other one away; big match and derby cannot happen in the first and in the last matchdays; and so on.Jackson Harrison wrote: ↑Wed Jul 26, 2023 23:07How did manual draw work?
Of course doing manually it was a huge work, and it took one week of manual work.
The first time they used the computer, in the 70s, it took eight minutes "only".

Playing in the National Team from 1997 (he was 19) to 2018 (he was 40).
He missed only Euro2000 due to injury got in a friendly match just few days before.
from wikipedia:
"Buffon was awarded his first cap for Italy's senior team under Cesare Maldini on 29 October 1997, at the age of 19 years and 9 months (19 years, 274 days), as an injury replacement for Gianluca Pagliuca during the first leg of the 1998 World Cup qualification play-off against Russia, in Moscow... Buffon came on in the 31st minute and made notable saves under snowy conditions in a 1–1 away draw"
