North versus South tie headlines TotalEnergies CAF Champions League resumption

https://www.cafonline.com/caf-champions ... esumption/

Africa’s biggest club competition officially resumes this week, with Match Day 4 of the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League marking the resumption of the competition.

After three rounds of exciting encounters across the continent, the race towards a place in the quarter finals is gradually taking shape in the four groups of 16 strong African clubs.

While Match Day 4 promises a number of exciting duels across the continent, a special focus will be on the unpredictable Group A of the competition which has proven to be one of the toughest groups so far.

Mamelodi Sundowns top the group by virtue of goal difference as they are equally tied on points with TP Mazembe, Nouadhibou as well as Pyramids FC who are all on four points after three rounds of fixtures.

Pyramids play host to Sundowns on Tuesday, following a highly tactical goalless stalemate in Pretoria last weekend which was a positive result for the Egyptians away from home. The two sides meet in what promises to be one of the matches of the week in Match Day 4.

Pyramid are competing in their first-ever TotalEnergies CAF Champions League, while Sundowns have established themselves in the competition following their 2016 feat and recent performances ever since.

Looking at Group B, Wydad AC are looking to build from their confidence boosting win over Simba AC last weekend which was their first following two losses in the group.

The former champions recently parted ways with former coach, Adel Ramzi and reunited with astute Tunisian tactician, Faouzi Benzarti who’s first task will be against the East African giants on Tuesday.

Another Tanzanian side in action will be Young Africans, who travel across the continent to meet Medeama in Ghana in a must-win match for the Tanzanian champions on Wednesday.

In Angola, Petro de Luanda look to extend their lead at the top of Group C when playing host to Tunisia’s ES Tunis in Luanda. The North Africans are three points behind the hosts and will be looking at causing an upset away from home.

TotalEnergies CAF Champions League Match Day 4 Fixtures:

Tuesday, 19 December

13h00 GMT | TP Mazembe v Nouadhibou

13h00 GMT | Simba v Wydad AC

16h00 GMT | Petro de Luanda v ES Tunis

16h00 GMT | Asec Mimosas v Jwaneng Galaxy

16h00 GMT | Pyramids FC v Mamelodi Sundowns

19h00 GMT | Al Hilal v ES Sahel

Wednesday, 20 December

13h00 GMT | Young Africans v Medeama

Club Africain, Rivers Utd battle for top spot in TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup action

https://www.cafonline.com/caf-confedera ... up-action/

The TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup resumes on Wednesday, 20 December with another dose of high-octane African club football lined up across the continent.

A total of eight fixtures mark the resumption of the competition which will be Match Day 4 as the race towards a place in the quarter-finals heats up.

One of the marquee fixtures for the week will be a battle for the number one spot in Group C as Nigeria’s Rivers United travel to Tunis to face Club Africain.

The two sides met last week with the result going 1-0 in favour of United which interestingly sees the two sides equally tied on points, goals scored and conceded.

In another tie up north, Egypt’s Modern Future welcome USM Alger who have been in fine form as they look to defend their title.

The Algerian giants have collected maximum points in all their three matches, boasting clean sheets in all their encounters and will be looking at maintaining this impressive run.

In South Africa, SuperSport United must get a victory against Al Hilal Benghazi of Libya should they harbourany hopes of progressing further.

Unlike their Pretoria counterparts, Mamelodi Sundowns, United are yet to collect a single point in their previous three matches as they languish at the bottom of Group A.

TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup | Match Day 4 Fixtures:

Wednesday, 20 December

13h00 GMT | Diables Noirs v RS Berkane

16h00 GMT | Sagrada Esperanca v Zamalek

16h00 GMT | Stade Malien v Sekhukhune

16h00 GMT | Modern Future v USM Alger

Wydad wield axe after TotalEnergies CAF Champions League woes

https://www.cafonline.com/caf-champions ... ague-woes/

Moroccan giants Wydad Casablanca have terminated coach Adel Ramzi's contract following a poor start to their TotalEnergies CAF Champions League campaign.

Ramzi exits after Wydad picked up just one win from their opening three group matches to sit third in Group B.

A club statement confirmed the departure was by mutual consent, thanking Ramzi for his "sincerity and effort".

“Wydad Sports Club, headed by Saeed Nassiri, announces that it has parted with coach Adel Ramzi by mutual consent,” Wydad said in the official statement.

He added: “The executive office of the club and all its members, especially its fans, extend their sincere thanks to Coach Ramzi for everything he has done, and his keenness to lead the football team with sincerity and effort.”

His replacement comes in the form of Faouzi Benzarti, the veteran Tunisian taking charge for a fourth spell at Wydad.

Benzarti previously led the club to league and CAF Super Cup glory during his time in Casablanca.

His first test comes on Tuesday away to Tanzanian side Simba SC as Wydad look to resurrect their Champions League hopes.

The Moroccan heavyweights currently trail Group B leaders ASEC Mimosas by four points at the halfway stage.

Benzarti will hope to quickly steer last season's Champions League runners-up back on course to qualify for the knockout phase.

But their poor continental form has mirrored struggles domestically too, with Wydad fourth in the Moroccan top flight.

Now the most successful coach in Wydad's history must instantly work his magic to revive the faltering fortunes of a fallen African giant.
