AFC Futsal & Beach Soccer Committee approves competition formats and dates

https://www.the-afc.com/en/about_afc/te ... dates.html

The AFC Futsal & Beach Soccer Committee made several key decisions today as part of its efforts to ensure the continued progress of both sports at its second meeting held in Bangkok, Thailand.

Held on the eve of the ongoing AFC Futsal Asian Cup™ Thailand 2024 Final, the Committee, led by Chairperson Mehdi Taj, congratulated and sent their best wishes to the two finalists – Thailand and the Islamic Republic of Iran – on qualifying for Sunday’s final and expressed their gratitude to the hosts, the Football Association of Thailand, for their outstanding hosting capabilities.

In preparation for the FIFA Futsal Women’s World Cup that is set to kick off in 2025, the Committee approved the format, competition dates and regulations of the AFC Women’s Futsal Asian Cup 2025™, which will be organised quadrennially.

The AFC Women’s Futsal Asian Cup 2025™ Finals, tentatively scheduled to be held from May 7 to 18, will be contested in a centralised location by the Continent’s top 12 sides, divided into three groups of four teams each to be played in a single round robin format, with the top two finishers and two best third-placed teams qualifying for the Quarter-finals.

The Semi-finals, followed by the third-placed playoff match and title-decider will determine Asia’s three representatives at the inaugural edition of the women’s futsal global showpiece. The Committee also mandated the AFC Administration to finalise the format and competition dates of the Qualifiers, which will be decided based on the number of entries received and is currently scheduled to be held in the window of January 2025.

Moving onto the men’s equivalent, the Committee had a discussion on the format of the next edition of the AFC Futsal Asian Cup™. The Committee noted the challenges of the current biennial format, particularly against the backdrop of the quadrennial FIFA Futsal World Cup,

The Committee also discussed the impact on Asian futsal development from various aspects and after due consideration, the decision was taken to mandate the Administration to make the final decision taking into account all the points discussed at the meeting.

Members of the Committee also noted the growth of the AFC Beach Soccer Asian Cup™, which currently does not comprise a Qualifiers stage. In anticipation of expanded interest from PMAs, the Committee mandated the AFC Administration to decide on the format and competition dates of the potential AFC Beach Soccer Asian Cup™ Qualifiers, which is tentatively scheduled to be held from November 15 to 24, 2024.

Finally, the Committee also noted the comprehensive initiatives and programmes undertaken in the key areas of Referees, Technical and Development, which include the AFC Futsal & Beach Soccer Coaching Courses, the AFC Futsal Member Associations Development Online Meetings and the AFC Referees Recruitment 2023 and 2024.

All decisions will need to be ratified by the AFC Executive Committee to take effect.

FIFA launches FIFA Futsal World Ranking

https://www.fifa.com/fifaplus/en/news/a ... s-launched

In a huge step forward, FIFA has launched the FIFA Futsal World Ranking for the women's and men's game.

Futsal nations around world ranked globally for first time

Brazil top both men’s and women’s charts; Portugal and Spain complete top three

Rankings will be key reference point for world futsal

FIFA has launched the official FIFA Futsal World Ranking, with powerhouses Brazil the first number-one nation on both the men’s and women’s chart as the rapidly-growing sport takes another major step forward.

Although the FIFA/Coca-Cola Men’s World Ranking for football has existed since December 1992, and women’s senior national teams have been officially ranked by FIFA since 2003, that has not previously been the case for futsal. However, the indoor game has enjoyed exponential growth in recent years and this milestone moment represents the natural next step, as well as being the first time that FIFA men’s and women’s rankings have been launched concurrently.

Broadcasts of the FIFA Futsal World Cup™ in Lithuania in 2021 attracted an average of 2.42 million viewers per match, a massive 130 per cent increase on the previous edition in 2016. The FIFA Futsal World Cup Uzbekistan 2024™, which will be the first FIFA tournament staged in Central Asia, is likely to improve even on those impressive numbers, and a historic first FIFA Futsal Women’s World Cup™ will be held in 2025. Against this backdrop, FIFA has rolled out global rankings for its member associations’ women’s and men’s senior futsal national teams in recognition of the dynamic development of and global interest in the sport.

The initial rankings have been based on statistics gathered from over 4,600 FIFA 'A' matches. FIFA defines an international 'A' match as a match between two FIFA members for which both members field their first representative team ('A' team).

The new ranking system will also serve to seed teams for all upcoming editions of the FIFA Futsal World Cup – including during the recently announced draw for the 2024 competition in Uzbekistan. The system will likewise be used for qualification processes and enable comprehensive and consistent data to be gathered to monitor member associations in accordance with the FIFA Regulations Governing International Matches. That will support the prevention of practices that jeopardise the integrity of the sport, such as match manipulation.

In the nine editions of the FIFA Futsal World Cup to date, the inaugural top-ranked men’s side, Brazil, have been crowned champions five times and only failed to finish on the podium once. They are closely followed on the chart by Portugal, who arrive at this year’s FIFA Futsal World Cup as the holders and have won the last two European crowns. Spain, the two-time world (2000 and 2004) and seven-time European champions, are third in the standings.

Brazil’s women’s national team have been just as dominant as their male counterparts, having won all seven of the South American championships that they have contested. Spain and Portugal are again behind them on the women’s ranking, albeit in reverse order: three-time European champions Spain are second, with Portugal – who have finished runners-up to their Iberian rivals in two continental finals – in third.

The first FIFA Futsal Women’s World Ranking has been published

Thailand, Costa Rica, New Zealand and Morocco are also region-leaders

Brazil will have the eternal distinction of being the first leaders of the FIFA Futsal Women’s World Ranking. They are followed sequentially by Spain, Portugal, Argentina, Colombia, Thailand, Russia, IR Iran, Japan and Italy.

Costa Rica (20th), New Zealand (26th) and Morocco (59th) have the honour of being the highest-placed nations from the Concacaf, OFC and CAF regions respectively. Female futsal has grown exponentially recently, and next year will see the maiden FIFA Futsal Women’s World Cup™ take place.

Brazil captured a third straight Futsal Copa America Femenina crown in October, scoring 51 goals and conceding only one en route. Wilson Saboia’s side also won the Fafe Tournament, which featured fellow global powers Japan, Portugal and Spain, in March.

A Seleção boast Amandinha, the most exhilarating and greatest player in female futsal history, as well as golazo goddess Emilly Marcondes. Other outstanding Brazilians include Taty, Lucileia and the fast-emerging Ana Luiza.

Spain have won all three UEFA Women’s Futsal EUROs, the last of which came with a 5-1 thrashing of Ukraine in the final. Anita Lujan, who has just returned from anterior cruciate ligament surgery, and Peque, the MVP at the last continental finals, are widely regarded as two of the sport’s best performers. Coach Claudia Pons can also call upon one of the planet’s top goalkeepers in Silvia Aguete and thrilling winger Irene Samper.

Portugal have made rapid recent progress under Luis Conceicao. They have registered several thumping victories, won their last two encounters with arch-rivals Spain and finished second at the Fafe Tournament, where they gave Brazil a strict examination in an exhilarating 3-2 defeat. Fifo is one of the sport’s finest and most multifunctional players, and has outstanding team-mates in the form of Ana Catarina, Ana Azevedo and Janice Silva.

Argentina have finished runners-up at the last two editions of the Futsal Copa America Femenina. In captain Becha Nunez and young gem Silvina Nava, they have sorceresses capable of unlocking the most stringent of sides. Colombia, the only country other than Brazil to have conquered South America, complete the top five.

The next FIFA Women’s Futsal World Ranking will be published in October 2024.
