European Cups 2024 : draw format.

Post by Jimjim35 »

Hi,

With the new format in CL, EL and ECL, I'm wondering how will UEFA proceed for the draw of the 144 matches of league Stage.

We only know there will be 4 pots of 9 teams and each team will play against 2 others from each pot.

They will probably draw
Pot1 Vs Pot2 Then 3Vs4, 1vs3, 2vs4, 1vs4, 2vs3, 1vs1, 2vs2, 3vs3, 4vs4.

The problem is this would be extremly boring.

Any ideas ?

I'd expect that there would be a predetermined algorithm for the fixtures. So for the Champions League and Europa League, for example, where we have 4 pots of 9 teams, the teams assigned as #1 in each pot will (say) play at home against all #2s and away against all #9s. So straight after the draw, each team will know their 8 fixtures and then UEFAs computer will work out the scheduling of dates to give a spread of fixtures to meet other criteria.

My thoughts are along the same lines. I believe that the only criteria they’ll have to keep in mind is that teams from the same countries (unless there are 5 teams) can’t play each other. They might also have restrictions on certain countries playing each other. Both of these can be resolve with the removal of teams from the possibility of being selected at a conflicting spot. To use your example, if a team from EPL is selected as #1, no EPL team can be selected to be #2 or #9.

It looks like the concacaf draw.

We make a calendar with 36 teams before the draw :

Team A from pot 1 (1A) Vs 1B-1C-2D-2E-3F-3G-4H & 4I.
Same for team 1B...

Then, they just have to attribute a letter for each team by draw.

My message and my simulation were a suggestion for our prediction game draw next season. It was a particular simplified case, without home/away.
In the case of the real CL draw I think a computer is needed.
Hope for more partecipants in the next Prediction Game

Do we know if there's a restriction to how many teams of one country any team can play?

Thanks! So with bad luck, you can play against 4 or 5 teams of PL. That would be difficult.

You could only get 1 now (but 2 matches).

Why do people think that there should be limitation on how many teams from a given country a team can play?

I can see travel restrictions (e.g, a team from Iceland should not have to travel to Cyprus, Israel and Turkey), but why shouldn’t they play three or four teams from Norway?

For the same reason there is still country protection. Country protection at groups didn't on;y ensure that a club will not face a club from same country but also ensured that all clubs will fact opponents from different countries
